Re: Madagascar giant swallowtail (Pharmacophagus antenor)
Pharmacophagus antenor is the most primitive of the Troidini apart from Battus . Its ancestor branched off from the ancestors of the rest of the Troidini about 35 million years ago (Condamine et al . 2018. Mitochondrial phylogenomics, the origin of swallowtail butterflies, and the impact of the num...

Re: Rearing parides species in Central America
It is always better to spread the androconial fold, then markings on the underside of the fold are also visible on a photo of the underside, as well as seeing the colour of the scales inside the fold.

Re: Rearing parides species in Central America
I think they are, but panares also has white scales in the androconial fold. Once they are spread if you can post new photos that would be better.

This is a Hemipteran bug, which has piercing and sucking mouthparts. It cannot bite or chew leaves. According to this it seems to be Catacanthus incarnatus https://www.thaibugs.com/wp-content/gallery/shield-bugs/Pentatomidae%20Catacanthus%20incarnatus.jpg See also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catac...

Re: Papilio ophidicephalus
I think the original locality data is "Worlds View, Pietermaritzburg" for the top specimen and "Ngome Forest" for the second. The bottom line of data says "P date & place", which is where the pupa (= P) came from. Both emerged in Pietermaritzburg. The labels need co...

Interestingly, as well as specimens from Batang, E Tibet and far NW Yunnan, a new locality was discovered by a reliable Chinese collector/seller at a mountain in Linzhi, S Tibet. This is further west than previously known.

Strange, I posted that it is a crane fly (family Tipulidae) about half an hour after the original post appeared, but my reply has been deleted.

Re: Rearing parides species in Central America
This looks like Parides anchises farfan from the photos. That subspecies occurs around the Canal Zone. You should also have Parides panares lycimenes in the area. The outer edge of the red hindwing band in the male of panares should be straighter than anchises . Parides iphidamas is also present in ...

Papilio bianor ganesa Papilio bianor ganesa comes from Nepal, Bhutan and just east of there. Your specimen is Papilio bianor triumphator . I recently published a paper about these two subspecies with Shao-ji Hu and Yutaka Inayoshi, and we designated a lectotype for Papilio ganesa Westwood, 1842. It...

Re: CITES in-depth study
I suspect that you have to comply with both CITES AND EU law when importing specimens into the EU.
As far as I know (correct me if this is wrong) specimens with paperwork can be moved between countries within the EU without having to ask for additional documents.

Re: Which tropical hardwood is best for insect boxes?
Teak wood must be absolutely dry before making the boxes, otherwise the wood will split. Normally it must be professionally dried, and after that it will be safe to use to store specimens. Note it is very heavy. I actually think you don't need to use hardwood. I will ask what type of wood those supe...
