Agreed Chuck, clearly Charles knew what he was doing, continuing to receive material, he was still operating his business up until not long ago.
He was gruffy and perhaps conceited, tempting fate with the feds is not my idea of sound strategy.

Re: NY Man charged with smuggling birdwings
That's unfortunate for Dr. Limmer. I am sorry for him. Yes, he circumvented the rules. Nevertheless, I have sympathy, not everyone will, like I told
my defense attorney one time- "someone's got to do it" . If there is a market, there will be suppliers, I have limmerleps butterflies-

Re: tiny caterpillars
Digging in was a little problematic, they are picky and took some coaxing, but turn into pupa fairly quickly.

Re: Beeflies !
I like the hoverflies and beeflies. Yes, when I was younger, I caught everything. Now, it is different, and I have narrowed the field a bit, but all insects are fair game, especially something new or to cool to pass up. Here we have several species I have noticed of hoverflies and the beeflies. Cock...

Re: Light collecting
You're not alone. Everyone has noticed different behavior at the light, some species tend to land on the fringes of the light footprint, and some never seem to alight before flying off out of sight. I try to not stare at the light in the first place :) It certainly appears that many fly to the light...

Re: tiny caterpillars
About as big as they get.
There is an amazing color change just before they burrow in, I'll get to that later.

Re: Light collecting
I have read that mercury vapor attracts a wider range of insects, as well as some that won't fly to UV. Mercury vapor takes more electricity, so you may need a generator in the field. I haven't seen any posts or read anything about battery operated mercury vapor. Let us know if you find one. I have ...

Re: Moth Confusion
Interesting. Anyone who has worked or been around building construction has probably noticed water beetles and other aquatics will sometimes land on a plywood roof, and presumably other reflective surfaces.

Re: tiny caterpillars
DSCN2190-1.jpg Nice beetles, I've always wanted to make a display mount with weevils. We might as well have a new caterpillar picture- this one is a freshly molted wallichi larva, the blue color is transitory and only happens after molting. Seems like I always forget something. One interesting thin...

Re: Insect collection cleaning
there is the canned air I use for blowing dust around the house, it won't do much good now, but Bioquip sold a cleaning fluid for insects, in particular, beetles, it's components are- ethyl alcohol ,ethyl acetate and Benzene (5.5%). That's exactly how the ingredients are listed on the bottle. It was...

Re: Net bag color?
The net I normally use is green, I never thought of the color being discreet, I read that green is less frightening to the quarry. Maybe, maybe not. Maybe I need more time in the field- In any event. any one else with me that wants a net gets white. Although my folding net is white and I use that a ...

Re: Thai Sunray Canna
Well, I think all mammals are cute on some level, as far as the rabbits, there aren't enough or any of them to be pests. I have an old photo of a rabbit here at home, but it was at least 10 or more years ago. Right now the starlings are frustrating me, the deer here are virtually tame, and very relu...

Re: Thai Sunray Canna
Those are nice. I grow flowers here on the Oregon coast as well, we typically stick with the natives from the local nursery, while it is cold now- 26f this morning, it never lasts long, only just long enough to kill off anything weak or that I took a chance on. The real threat are the forest goats, ...

Re: tiny caterpillars
Yes. Such a variety of life. Fake looking animals on a fake looking plant. It would be a feat to burrow in the ground with those antennae.

Most of the larva have molted a 3rd time, now the appendages are much larger and more of a shiny black. Nice we don't have those things on our
heads.

Re: tiny caterpillars
I always just put fresh leaves in, most of the larvae would migrate to the new material within a day- or hours. Yes, I did have to use that approach for a species that needed some help deciding on a food plant, I tossed in a variety for a week or so, other than that, I like to use potted plants whe...

I am thinking I realize why some breeders use bins and toss in leaves.
A lot of patience is required to move larva with a brush to new food plant.

Re: Happy New Year 2024
I'm glad you asked Chuck. This species is eating Ligustrum japonica, at last I have found a use for this plant I bought years ago for a different species. I do have a number of leafy evergreens that have proved useful in the past as well, Eucalyptus gunni, olive, an evergreen oak, ceanothus, and the...

Re: Happy New Year 2024
Yes.
I already have a good start without even leaving the house. 2 new Genus/species of livestock, in fact some of my newly purchased ova
hatched this morning. Now I need the luck.
Best wishes to everyone. Good bye '23, I'm not going to miss it.
