Re: Biggest Beetle
Another interesting thread. I'll probably never own a Titanus specimen, can I afford 2k for a beetle? Yes. There's more to it than that- once I start buying big showy beetles, there's no end in sight. I agree with Titanus being the largest, with mass being the deciding factor. It must be something t...

20230223_084245.jpg It's 24 f this morning, we got about 8 inches of snow Thursday, unheard for the central Oregon coast. Moths fly pretty much all year here, I just caught a geometrid a few weeks ago that flew up to the patio door. It's set and in my collection, with capture data..I think it's goi...

Re: A "blending" of insect diversity
Unit trays look organized, and being organized is a wonderful thing. I have limited space and trays would cost space for me. A small number of cases is 15 18"x 12" . They are organized though. My collection is nearly all self caught, or raised. There are a lot of ways to organize specimens...

I think this is a real thing. Just wait until the mutant ants climb out of that train wreck. I've lived in America a long time now, and I think people will
fall for just about anything.

Tails are tough, and it becomes a decision to try and flatten them, or leave them ala natural. I've raised isis and meanas a few times, and spread a lot of them, I try and use a glass slide to flatten the tails, but a good portion seem to end up with one perfectly flat tail, and the other, not so mu...

Re: Beetle Legs
I do prefer the legs of beetles in a outstretched, or a walking position. Exceptions are the rule however, and the smaller they get, the more difficult and or determined it becomes. I've got 2 Goliathus species in shadow boxes mocking me right now, but that was then, and this is now, and I make more...

When I first discovered The Lepidopterist's Society, it was a godsend, even though many of the offerings were gone by the time I got my copy of the News, still I made a lot of contacts through networking, I lost my way for a few years, and when I rejoined the society, it seemed all they could do on ...

Ask this question on the Actias.de site, I've seen a number of persons who go to a place in Africa I believe in Cameroon? It's called Obout Village if I recall correctly. I see livestock offered from the village, and I've traded with someone who's traveled there. It's a different trip from the EU, j...

Well, at least they get outside, I prefer solitude as well, the people with dogs are the worst at times, I like dogs just fine, but like people, they are unpredictable. Unlike your dog, I am not "friendly"- I live at the coast, and we have plenty of tourists, there is always someone fallin...

Love the tailed moths, and they never cease to amaze, the length of some species. I've got my portion, either raised from ova or bought
as cocoons.
I admire your use of space to give the animals the room they deserve. You can layer, or not-

Some nice Norman Rockwell images, and there were good old days. My collection sure never looked as professional. It's difficult thing, today I was looking up a word using my phone, it wasn't delivering results. The phone "overheard" my expletive, and told me, "please don't speak to me...

Ebay policy also says that live insects can only be sold as feeders, I sell livestock there all the time and don't rip people off charging 40 bucks for 1 cecropia, sans shipping. You might try Carolina biological, although they may limit species depending on where you live. Yes, I looked at Ebay las...

Well, when you see what livestock sells for on Ebay, you'll see why I used the word "desperate" . That is a bunch I'd call unethical. But that's just
my opinion.

Until you see one, those giant centipedes don't give a person a sense of the amazing size. I saw one a a reptile show, it looked like a snake.

I just watched a butterfly one where the narrator claimed birdwings lived in Pakistan. He didn't even mention the Solomon islands. Not exactly what I'd call learning material, but it can be junk food. Troides helena occurs in Pakistan. Troides are the birdwings. Thanks for the correction, in any ev...

I don't think any problems exist, each year is different, people don't always advertise livestock. Some times you need to post a want ad, and even then it's a crapshoot. I've found that over the last ten years or so, a large variety of natives have been offered, it's just that life isn't a productio...

I've done it, I can't recall why, but the pin probably needs removed, and for that, I had to soften the area around the pin and use pliers to hold the pin,
and tweezers to push the body off, It worked 99% of the time without a problem.

A long read Eurytides- interesting article. Clearly virtually every collector knows National Parks are off limits, as are state parks. Interesting individuals as well, seemed a little obsessive, I recall seeing a program where a collector had what must have been thousands of Colias, a single species...
