Re: Permethrin- kills more than just ticks

Update on the yellow jacket nest. After a misting of Permethrin, they continued to go in and out for a few days, and there would be 20-30 dead or dying on the porch each day. Then for about five days, no activity. Suddenly, lots more activity. And, the dead wasps started piling up again. Since I onl...

Re: Permethrin- kills more than just ticks

Hot off the press, New York State Lyme cases have already exceeded all of 2022.

That's a good question. Why not use it?

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II

I found an error in a publication. It's rather obvious, but thought I'd note it: THE POPULATION BIOLOGY OF TWO EASTERN TIGER SWALLOWTAIL SUBSPECIES (PAPILIO (PTEROURUS) GLAUCUS GLAUCUS L. AND P. G.MAYNARDI AUTHIER) (LEPIDOPTERA: PAPILIONIDAE), AND ITS CORRELATION TO THE NORTHERN-FLORIDA SUTURE ZONE ...

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II

18Aug23: 20C, on-off-rain, very windy Didn't look for Tigers, given conditions. While standing on the back deck during a brief bit of weak sun I was attacked by a Papilio cresphontes. It was flying very weakly and was badly worn. I was wearing a bright lime green shirt, which is what I suspect attra...

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II

17Aug23: 28C, 10/10 cloud cover, breezy. Five spotted, one captured. Two were just fly-bys, others on Cup Plant and I just could not get to them. All seen today were damaged, most were completely wrecked; one had almost no hindwings and the FW were ripped up with little scaling left, but somehow it ...

Re: Permathrin- kills more than just ticks

Permethrin treatment of clothing is also a good way to go if you're collecting/working in malaria endemic areas. How does it impact exposed skin like hands and face? I haven't picked up a tick with my Permathrin clothing, though certainly they could get on my hands, face, neck. Having had malaria t...

Re: Permathrin- kills more than just ticks

Permethrin acts on neurons. It interferes with sodium channels to disrupt the function of neurons, and causes muscles to spasm, culminating in paralysis and death. It is not a carcinogen. I have never used it because I am not out much, but it does not seem too worrisome. Skin absorption is low, abo...

Re: Papilio glaucus

In my observation, the brightest (most blue) females tend to be from the mid Atlantic area: NC, VA. In other areas, the blue is as bright but not as extensive. In appalachiensis the blue in each cell fades as it approaches the veins, whereas in ssp. maynardi the blue in each cell is often separated ...

Re: Permathrin- kills more than just ticks

Well, I'm glad we put fear to bed with science. Interesting that John notes ticks pass over Permathrin and go to sleep, given that it killed the ants and yellowjackets. In the case of the latter, they'd fall from the nest twitching, then die. None flew off. The die-off and falling wasps covered two ...

Re: Permathrin- kills more than just ticks

Your final remark in your reply presuming that I am "sitting in a room buying butterflies" is sorely misplaced. I said "I" am not interested in sitting in a room buying butterflies. I enjoy many of the images you and others post, even if I already have that species. Generally, t...

Re: Papilio glaucus

Spectacular photo. The lighting is perfect to show off the blue. And yes, they have that much blue; so much in fact it goes up the margin of the FW. This is of course a female, the males don't have as much blue (or, more commonly, none at all.)

Re: Permathrin- kills more than just ticks

Permethrin is based on pyrethroids - natural insecticides that mammals detoxify pretty easily thanks to our mix-function oxidase enzymes (which insect do not have). Those fast acting "fly-sprays" that restaurants use are pyrethrin-based. These sprays knock the flies down quickly, but you ...

16Aug23: 24F, 9/10 cloud, following 24 hours of soaking rain. Cup plant field. 2 observed, 2 captured. Both males- one old and beat, the other fresh. There were no other Tigers. It started to rain again, I left. June 2021 and June 2022 were horrible with constant cold fronts, severe storms, and rain...

Re: Papilio troilus at flowers

I have noticed for the last two years a very low number of insect here in Southern Ontario as well. As we are ending now global warming era and entering global boiling era propagated by global elites and politics what is really that contributes to such a drop in relatively short period of time. 5G ...

Re: Papilio troilus at flowers

Interesting. I looked on iNat for sassafras, a preferred host plant, and sure enough mid-Illinois it dwindles out. That would explain the relative rarity. In Finger Lakes region of Upstate NY, troilus is common, as is sassafras. There are two flights, though I'm not certain the second are offspring ...

Permethrin- kills more than just ticks

I coat my field clothes in Permathrin because in our area more than 60% of ticks carry Lyme disease, and it's a very serious disease. I have to say, it works great- never had a tick on me with the Permathrin-coated clothing. Now, as a homeowner, there are regular problems with wasp and ant infestati...
