Re: Papilio ulysses

I was impressed that you collected the joesa male yourself, especially as it only has a small rub mark on the forewing, much better quality than I expected a wild caught specimen is likely to be, especially of an active species like this one. Do tell us how you managed to catch it. Adam. With a lur...

Superb examples...
Thanks again Trehopr.
It was a great thrill for me to observe & collect this species in the wild. A magnificent butterfly to see on the wing.

Re: Dumbing down

I was watching the news on the BBC just now when the reader said: "It seems there won't be so many butterflies around this year because the drought in the UK last year has affected the plants that YOUNG BUTTERFLIES rely on". Oh dear, obviously whoever wrote that either doesn't realise tha...

Re: Agrias butterflies

Those are two gorgeous examples Dave ! I have one of the same quality myself although, yours both have a bit more blue than mine. I'm once saw a dealer at the Toronto Fair (when it was held years ago) and he had a whole series of these males for very affordable prices but, they were basically all A...

bobw wrote: Thu Mar 30, 2023 2:28 pm Dave, in your 3rd photo, I'm not sure where you got the name diana from, it's ssp. helena. Also, eusebes is now generally considered to be a synonym of r. rhetenor.
Sorry Bob. My error. Have amended now. Thank You.
Thanks also for the info on eusebes.

Adam.
Sounds very interesting Adam. Look forward to hearing about it.

Re: Agrias butterflies

A very recent and pleasing acquisition to my Agrias holdings is this Agrias beata (female) from Peru. It was collected in November of 2020. This is a species which I have always desired. As has been mentioned by others it remains a species with a lot of variable colors. Sometimes, more blue (here o...

A true splendor amongst the South American nymphalids to be sure ! You are fortunate Dave to have 2 really nice males. Getting such nice ones is tough because the black showes everything (like scratches and wing-mars) very readily.... Thanks Trehopr. It's a butterfly that was readily available as e...

Wow, red-n-black just go so well togather as colors. Don't matter where it appears --- it just looks GOOD ! Striking genus, of which I've only seen in books. Never seen any in private collections that I've seen.... Agree Trehopr. It's a really beautiful genus. The reds in this genus are the richest...

Dave, all my IDs have been done from the Dottax & Pierre paper, along with various conversations with Michel. This genus always fascinated me and I had a small collection of about 100 specimens representing most populations. However, when I had severe space problems I gave them all to Michel in...

Re: Siderone

Here is a treatment of the genus in French. https://www.persee.fr/doc/bsef_0037-928x_2009_num_114_4_2703. They recognize three species, but my poor understanding of French limits me as to why they separate nemesis from galanthis. And here is my favorite - Siderone syntyche syntyche. In flight this ...
