Re: To Bima & Back Again: A Journey through the Bush of Bas-Uele

DAY 1 – July 5th (Bunia, Ituri to Banda, Bas-Uele) The only realistic way to get in and out of the region is by air. We organized with Mission Aviation Fellowship to fly us in to Banda on a Cessna Caravan (this is a charter which usually costs about $2000 US). View of the Bamokandi River: https://i...

Map of the area visited (with villages featuring our churches & congregations labeled) : https://imgur.com/ZUxLDMX.jpg - The area shown is ~250km across (sorry for the lack of scale) and is oriented with North at the top (unlike the locally drawn maps which are almost always oriented to have the...

To Bima & Back Again: A Journey through the Bush of Bas-Uele

Back in July of this year, I had the privilege of traveling up to Bas-Uele, DRC for work (I’m a Christian missionary working within the administration of a Congolese church). Bas-Uele province is one of the least developed areas on the planet. I’m not exaggerating. Most of the province lacks basic i...

Re: Genus: Epitola

Huh... I was expecting these to be widely collected. They're among the most stunning of African species. Shows how much I know about the commercial market.

Re: Genus: Epitola

Some Polyommatinae species do like to mud-puddle on ash, others where palm oil is pressed. Latrines also seem to attract certain species. I haven't purposefully set out bait for Lycaenids though, so I don't know if they can be baited like Charaxes, for example.

see some P. rubrobasalis rags) Might as well, this is a great resource might as well make it as comprehensive as possible. I’m not afraid of ragged butterflies. Well, if you insist! Pseudacraea rubrobasalis Aurivillius, 1903 (male) 8/IV/2017 Near Mbogi, Ituri (1°41'55"N, 30°07'35"E) 1250-...

Re: Pseudacraea

I'm all out of Pseuadacraea to share for the time being (unless someone wants to see some P. rubrobasalis rags).

Does anyone have P. annakae or P. acholica? P. imerina from Madagascar is another strange one.

As a window into some of the challenges found within his work, here's an in-depth 3 part review of d’Abrera’s Butterflies of the Afrotropical Region – Part III (second edition), 2009, which was published in Metamorphosis . (N.B. the authors of this review were/are among the top authorities on Afrotr...

Re: Specimen Macro Photography

Thanks for taking the time for such a comprehensive introduction. The results are fabulous. I presume if you had a ring light you’d use it? I’ve not had success eliminating shadow with multiple bulbs so that’s impressive. Using the label as your white reference is ingenious. Removing the label from...

I see what you're saying. But, you guys are serious collectors of some pretty special specimens. I'm just an old guy farting around with common bugs. I wouldn't expect anyone else to do what I've done. To me, they look more life like standing on their own legs. A pin sticking through them kind of s...

A while ago I promised to write a post about my DIY photography set-up. Here it is: https://imgur.com/1LIbtY5.jpg A closer look at the camera rigging: https://imgur.com/5cfpUIR.jpg Some notes: I don't have many options for bulbs out here. The ones I'm using at the moment are 18W and a bit on the coo...

Re: Pseudacraea

I have seen this listed as a species (Pseudacraea gamae), rather than a subspecies. This is in “Butterflies of the World” Part 16. Nymphalidae VII, Pseudacraea. By Jacques Hecq, Dated 2003. Anyone have any thoughts as to which is correct? D'Abrera in 2004 reverted Hecq's change & returned it to...

Re: The silence....

What I'd not like to see is my leaving, or others who contribute. Admittedly, I spend more time on iNaturalist now. The driver was the environment here, but now that I'm there I enjoy iNat because I learn more. I just want to point out that the entirety of my collection is uploaded to iNaturalist. ...

Replace "larvae" with "butterfly" and I think you'll quickly understand why I disagree with this line of thinking (even though I'm not a collector of larvae).
