Re: Papilio machaon, long time ago

That is a VERY special specimen. The sentimental value is priceless. It also appears to be in perfect condition including the color. Thank you for sharing.

Re: Ornithoptera croesus

Trehopr1 - I had a Pair of O. priamus miokensis but gave (yes gave!) them away to a friend/fellow collector years ago, as he was intent on obtaining all subspecies. The male was the aquamarine color that you speak of. These were not perfect A1, as I believe they were almost certainly wild caught, an...

Giant Stick Insect (Eurycnema nigrospinosa) Display

This is a very recently completed display featuring a Pair of Eurycnema nigrospinosa . This species has been misidentified in the trade for many years as E. goliath . If you have " E. goliath " in your collection, and the data says Papua New Guinea, then it is actually E. nigrospinosa , as...

Goliath Beetle Wall Display (34 specimens)

This is a Goliath Beetle display that I made in 2006. I've recently done a very minor "refresh" (swapped 4 beetles with better or more unique replacements) and decided to take a new photo. The image was only taken with a cellphone, so the quality isn't great, and the limitations of a cell ...

Re: A few (Goliath) beetles in a sea of Leps!!!

Just thought I'd add some beetles since there are so few in this section of the forum! Not terribly rare but these are somewhat unique specimens. Very recently spread the first two males and added them to a large wall display... All very choice specimens indeed! How do you keep large beetles such a...

Re: A few (Goliath) beetles in a sea of Leps!!!

I have deleted a second thread I had made with Goliath beetles, and will add those photos to this thread. Should have done that in the first place! Goliathus goliatus quadrimaculatus from Kuba, Cameroon. Very large and clean male at 99mm. GGQ IN.jpg Goliathus cacicus with violet glow, from Ivory Coa...

Very nice specimens. I think Goliathus regius is the most spectacular Goliath species. Would love to see a picture of the whole display! I will try and post a photo of the display in the "Insect Artwork" category soon. At the moment the display is still "apart" due to the "...

Incredible collection! Thank you very much for sharing! I was able to sit down at the home computer this evening (rather than just the cell phone) and look through the drawers. Quite an accomplishment you have there!

livingplanet3 - thank you very much for the compliments and the interesting articles. However, the articles have only made me feel more sorrow for letting mine go! I'm joking of course , but I don't think I fully realized just how rare they are in collections, when I sold mine! Especially truly pris...

Re: Idea(Danainae)

Dave - the Idea agamarschana are outstanding! I think that both of your I. tambusisiana may be ssp. hideoi . I am definitely no expert on these, however, so I may be wrong. I have photographed my pair of Idea t. hideoi , as well as my pair of Idea t. tambusisiana for comparison. Again, it could be m...

Re: Zelotypia stacyi

Wow, that artwork is absolutely incredible and a "treasure" to be sure in its own right ! Very few people in this life can accomplish that level of detail in insects (of any kind). Leps are by far the most difficult of all given all their various color tones and markings. Simply astonishi...

Re: UV and birdwings

Thank you so much panacanthus for your insights and personal observations on this interesting topic. Hopefully, novice enthusiasts will learn to avoid framing their lepidoptera for enjoyment; or will at least not expose them to undo natural light (if they want to keep them as beautiful) as when the...

Re: Ornithoptera euphorion "golden form"

Bill, was the verso of your goldens actually orange? The verso of my male was the same yellow as the recto. I notice that the abdomen also appears orange underneath, and the female also appears to have a very orangish verso.

Zelotypia stacyi

Here is a pair of moths which are not commonly seen. Zelotypia stacyi (Hepialidae) from Queensland, Australia. Although it does not show up in the photo, the white areas in the forewings of the male are quite pearlescent. The female is huge - this one has a wingspan of 234mm. I sold these a few year...

Re: UV and birdwings

Here is a photo of the specimen I talked about in my previous post, in a drawer with 5 other males. This was taken under a different type of lighting than the previous photo. I think it shows the difference in colors a little better. When seen by itself in person, is appears a bluish green, but when...

Re: UV and birdwings

In my experience, sunlight will definitely alter the green coloration of birdwings over time. I had a frame with a single pair of O. goliath supremus in my living room for 15+ years. This room received bright natural light, and during certain times of the year, the frame would receive direct sunligh...

I don't frequently photograph live insects in the wild, but here are a few rather old photos taken at the back yard koi pond (Chandler, Arizona). I don't know if a single common bumblebee even counts lol!! I also don't know the dragonfly species. :? The "black water" of the dragonfly photo...

Re: Ornithoptera euphorion "golden form"

This was an "intermediate" pair I had. From the same group as the "pure" goldens. Very poor photo! The dark looking areas around the hindwing spots were not stains. They were the effect/result of yellow "trying" to come through from the verso. These were placed i...
