Re: Papilio godeffroyi
According to Wikipedia (I know, a very suspect source) godeffroyi is endemic to all of Samoa, but is now only found on Tutuila, and even then only in undisturbed forest. Yes, apparently it was present on Savai'i and Upolu islands but went extinct there, although there have been very occasional repo...

Re: Papilio godeffroyi
So it can't be as common as most fuscus-group Papilio, for whatever reason. Most fuscus-group species are quite happy in suburban areas. Even Papilio amynthor (fuscus-group or not, I don't know) is quite commonly observed flitting around Norfolk Island. Papilio amynthor is the basal species in the ...

Re: Papilio godeffroyi
Hopefully not. It apparently occurs in many different habitats on American Samoa including urban areas, so hopefully a fire wouldn't cause its extinction.

Re: Papilio dehaanii
Lovely specimens, but Papilio dehaanii is a separate species to P. bianor . Your specimens from Honshu, Japan are ssp. dehaanii . True P. bianor only occurs in Yaeyama Islands (Ishigaki etc) in southernmost Japan. There is a third species, P. ryukyuensis on Okinawa (ssp. ryukyuensis ) and Amami (ssp...

Is this an aberrant ssp. gordion from the Philippines?

Re: Vespa crabro
Interesting that you mentioned Vespa crabro comes to light. We have a hornet here in genus Provespa that is a menace at light traps. See https://www.thaibugs.com/wp-content/gallery/hymenoptera-misc/z%20no%20id9.jpg for a photo. We used to have a killing jar specifically to despatch all the wasps tha...

[i}Pyrops spinolae[/i] is another species that I have seen in my garden. They feed on sap from fruit trees here, and mainly sit on branches with wings folded over their abdomens, and flash the bright hindwings if disturbed.

I think you will find these are actually separate subspecies rather than 'forms'. The top photo is Neurosigma siva nonius Nicéville, 1896 see http://yutaka.it-n.jp/lim1/720870010.html whereas the orange specimen is Neurosigma siva dalatica Yoshino, 2017 see https://yutaka.it-n.jp/lim1/720870020.html...

Re: Weird Butterflies/Moths - Albinos, Leucism, Melanism, Gynanders, etc.
Ah I see, you actually weren't pointing out that chrapkowskoides is the correct species name. To clarify, Papilio bromius Doubleday, 1845 is a junior homonym of Papilio bromius Stoll, 1787 (a name proposed in Hesperiidae), and as a result the Doubleday name is unavailable and cannot be used. The nex...

That bromius (=chrapkowskoides), especially, is quite unique! I can't recall ever having seen one like that. Me neither, an amazing aberration. I assume you meant by the above that the name P. bromius is a junior homonym and the valid species name is Papilio chrapkowskoides . However, the way you w...

Despite apparently being quite common in the places it occurs in southern peninsular Thailand, Mormolyce phyllodes is one of the relatively few beetles protected by law in Thailand.

Re: Cerambycidae of "weird " appearance
Cerania bosci. This is quite common species in Thailand. The males resemble a drone, they fly slowly with the legs wide stretched in all direction. Easy to net it in flight however yes the legs are quite fragile and easy to brake off. In season I see these flying slowly around my garden. They look ...

Find it really strange that these Satyrid Euploea mimics look so bright in pictures of living specimens I have seen & yet seem comparatively dull when set/spread. This specimen does have a slight purple sheen to the forewings which is not evident in my photo. Photos of living ones seem to posit...

Re: Argynnis childreni

Thanks Adam. I thought about using Childrena but thought it was now back in Argynnis. My mistake. Dave, It seems you are right, and apologise for the error. I got a 'file corrupted' error message after downloading and trying to open the photo.
You won't get even an approximate ID without a photo, it's just not possible.
Adam.
PS. Try to upload the jpeg photo, rather than a zip folder, then it will display in the post.
