A male Colotis regina from Democratic Republic of Congo
& a close up of the purple tip. I find it impossible to take a photograph adequate enough to convey the beauty of the structural colouration in these butterflies. The wing tips change from reddish purple all the way to violet blue.

According to Williams (Afrotropical Butterflies and Skippers), there are currently 4 recognized subspecies of Cymothoe lucasii : The nominate is apparently found in Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, DRC (W) ssp. binotorum is a bit to the north apparently being found in Nigeria (Cross River loop), Cameroon,...

Always led to believe that this was a full species. Am now reading that it is considered a sub species of A priapus. It is certainly closely related to A. priapus but I don't think it's conspecific. A typical female & a "pink" female.
Also a darker "pink" Pieris rapae female.
Have not tampered with these photos. The specimens are this colour.
I have seen examples of these "pink" specimens in several British collections but have no idea how they were produced.
