Re: Stray Swallowtails

According to the Kaufman field guide, P anchisiades is "found mainly in extreme southern Texas, where it is apparently scarce or irregular, flying at various times from spring to late fall." Eggs & larvae have been found on the US side of the border, so it may be a part-time (not every...

Stray Swallowtails

Occasionally some non-resident species will stray into the USA from Mexico and the Caribbean.
Here are a few nice ones, top to bottom:
Papilio astyalus
Eurytides philolaus
Papilio pilumnus

Re: Question about pinning spread Lepidoptera

My guess is that many of the legs have already broken off from being pressed into the cotton. If that is the case and you don't mind losing a few more, just hold the specimen by the underside of the thorax (as described by Bill Garthe) and insert the pin into the top of the thorax. I've done this nu...

Falcate Orangetips

I saw several Falcate Orangetips (Anthocharis midea) today. It is usually the first butterfly of the spring brood in my area. Also saw a snout butterfly (Libytheana bachmanii) and a couple of UFOs. Time to dust off my net.

Re: Even common species can offer subtle surprises

I see Phoebis sennae & A. andria on warm days all winter long. A. andria hides under bark. Not sure about P. sennae.

Re: Light collecting

My light rig has a 400w MV bulb (clear, not frosted) on one side of the sheet and four 40w, 48" UV fluorescent bulbs on the other side. The side with the MV light gets a lot more bugs. I use a generator for power.

Re: Net bag color?

E marcellus is definitely attracted to white flowers (among others). They usually land only briefly if at all and yes, they are a challenge to capture. Unless you are a magician with the net, you have to get them while they are on the flower. Maybe a piece of fabric with white flowers on it would wo...

Re: Net bag color?

I used a green net bag for many years. It was OK, but it was difficult to see through. Later I bought a Bioquip net with a white bag. It is much easier to see through and diminishes the chances of damaging the wings when removing specimens from the net. It also has the advantage of attracting some s...

I ordered some plastazote from them. They were very nice and the order was delivered promptly. I plan to become a regular customer.
