Re: Coenonympha pamphilus

Another species that's disappeared here is Aglais urticae ( Small tortoiseshell). it was one of the commonest species when I was a kid, I used to see many on every Buddleia bush. now I see 2 or 3 a year if I'm lucky, but I hear it's much more common further north. The Wall disappeared from my part ...

Re: Coenonympha pamphilus

Lovely little satyr species. 👍☺️ Sadly, satyr species even here (I believe) have been sadly in decline or have become much more localized as the years have gone by. Like lycaenids, satryrs are great indicators of a healthy habitat/ ecosystem or that of one being affected largely (by man) in some ma...

Coenonympha pamphilus

Known in the U.K. as The Small Heath this butterfly was abundantly common in my childhood in many localities close to where I live now. It has sadly disappeared from almost all of these localities & where it is still found the numbers are drastically depleted. It's a tiny Satyrid which is a deli...

Morpho anaxibia

My personal favourite of all the Morphos. Mainly for the wonderful rich & unique texture of the wings. I have only one female to go with my males. First picture is of the female. Next picture a pair( same female with one of my males) & the next a picture card issued in 1964 in a series "...

Re: LIVESTOCK IMPORTATION

Many years ago I bought a couple of pairs of O. tithonus and O. goliath pupae from a show here, I can't remember who I bought them from. Unfortunately, all the resulting adults were crippled, although not all emerged. Sounds like I did a wise thing in not buying any Bob. Hope you didn't pay too muc...

Re: LIVESTOCK IMPORTATION

The only time I saw Ornithoptera livestock advertised in the U.K. was in the 1994 catalogue from WorldWide Butterflies.
This was in the form of pupae. I have never seen ova or larvae of birdwings offered here.
I did not actually buy any of these pupae. Regret not doing so now of course !!

Mallika (Kallima) jacksoni

Think I have posted a thread on this species before. Have taken new pictures of nine males & three females in my collection. They are all from Uganda & date from the mid to late 2010s. For a good part of my life this butterfly had always been sort of mythical. A few authors had it as the mos...

Re: Morpho rhetenor

It's ssp. helena , helenor is an entirely separate species. Sorry Dave, I can't have made myself clear. The specimen you picture is M. rhetenor helena . M. helenor is a banded species, similar to M. achilles . No Bob. It was me. In a rush. Familiar with both those names so it was entirely my fault ...

Hi Adam, On the previous page of this thread I did make mention of the outspread forewings being 92mm. across (at the widest point). Dave in turn mentioned that he would have to measure his 2 pictured specimens at a later point. Here are those two specimens again Trehopr. The smaller one is S neumo...

Hello Dave, Here is that Myanmar Stichopthalma sp.(again) which I have just freshly removed from the spreading board. So, now you can see all the details in it. I am also providing a underside view in case this helps much more in a definitive I.D. Data label shown in my previous post. Thank you so ...
