Communication and the inexplicable

Not long ago, I had an issue with a seller, wrote it off, and then months later, countered his post for livestock with a bad trade post . It did cost him money, because people contacted me. So, a couple days ago I get an email form the "seller" asking WTH? Well, the last 2 emails I'd sent ...

Re: Seed-Planting Drones

Here in the Northwest, logging is a big industry. Replanting by hand works, things do take time, the infamous Tillamook Burn is now regrown. We don't have the hardwood trees like the eastern USA, and conifers seem to grow quickly. It's all for the lumber here. As far as biofuel and ethanol, I think ...

Standard time

It's that time of year again. Move your clock from sunshine and happiness to misery and despair.
It might be called "standard time" but it sucks.
Perhaps someday we will all agree on what time it is, even though it's all subjective.

Thank you. Besides the errors in the listings, which insult our collective intelligence, those listing "dumps" are really annoying.

Re: Damn frogs, toads, lizards too....

Amazing stuff Vabrou. I have had the bats, I presume they find everyone's light. The skunk family one season. Only once here in Oregon have I encountered a toad after dark. reminded me of being in the Dominican Republic, but there were a lot more toads there, you keep thinking it's a big beetle. And...

Re: Speyeria hydaspe purpurascens?

Tim-
In Pyle's 'The Butterflies of Cascadia", it looks like purpurascens is a synonym of S. h. hydapse if I read it correctly.
If you want an excerpt from the book, I could scan it for you or simply type out the text.

Re: What do Hesperidologists dream of?

Interesting. I have never dreamt of any entomology related subjects. Not being able to act,or not acting is the thing that happens in dreams, at least that is what happens to me. Turtles are cool though! I've caught wild ones in northern Calif, and seen a bunch of babies once in a pool by a mountain...

Re: A parasitoid fly invading Saturniidae pupae?

Tachinid introduced as a pest control. That's just nice. There is yet another of the examples of the intelligence of our people in charge.
And I can't get a legal Atlas moth. I enjoy the same sentiments when I see a flock of starlings land on my bushes, just before I get my air pistol-

Re: A parasitoid fly invading Saturniidae pupae?

This is a problem with wild collected larva. I have had the larger share of Agapema cocoons be parasitized. Anytime a person buys cocoons, or butterfly pupa from wild collected larva, you are flipping a coin. That being said- sellers have a moral and ethical responsibilty to disclose if the larva ha...

Re: NY Man charged with smuggling birdwings

Bad news is just that, and it gets lots of rubbernecks. It is seemingly a regional thing sometimes, here in Oregon, we more often see stories about the release of Speyeria sp. at Cascade Head, or other stories about ecology. Habitat loss is the real culprit anywhere. It's the people who know best wh...

Re: NY Man charged with smuggling birdwings

When I bought my Ornithoptera from Charles, he did claim that Cites information would be sent. It was not. I didn't pursue the issue. The chances of anyone unwelcome getting into my house is slim, besides the nearly insurmountable task of tracking down all a seller's customers makes it very unlikely...

Re: Acherontia atropos feeding

I have read reviews of some of the artificial diets, and while I had no problems with my choice and the subsequent math problem of reducing the amounts, other buyers had issues with nearly every brand. If it's too runny, I just adjust the amount of liquid you're using. There is a supply company call...

Well, this thread has taken an anti- cat direction I can't support. Have I ever mentioned all the times I've been bitten by dogs in unprovoked
situations? Apparently some of us taste better than others-

So, here in Oregon, the annular eclipse was not visible. Did anyone get to see it in person? I saw the last one in 2012, I'd never heard of an annular eclipse before that. Maybe we'll head east in April for the total eclipse. Amazing when you head out for some of the celestial events, you find crowd...

You have misinterpreted the response to your post(s). If the topic is of interest to anyone, they'll react. Some of my posts get no response at all. It's nothing I take personally. For the record- I don't collect Morpho sp. or buy dead stock with any regularity. That's why I have no reason or contex...

Re: The future of the hobby

Spot on observations. Guilty. I used to read more, now I have a laptop. I can presume that if I was born in the recent past, rather than the mid 60's, I'd be even less likely to have a science related hobby. We didn't study insects in school when I was a kid, the interest was spurred on by reading a...

Re: NY Man charged with smuggling birdwings

The sensationalism by the news is typical. I haven't seen anything about the case except for what's been posted here. It's the same old story though, making mole hills into mountains. Same thing when I've run afoul of the law. The police reports and what gets in the newspaper make it sound like I ha...

Re: NY Man charged with smuggling birdwings

Well, that's unfortunate. I bought from Dr. Limmer , the specimens he listed on ebay were common Ornithoptera as other sellers listed the same species, I know he had other, more expensive species he didn't list on ebay. He was, or is a little gruffy, but I had no problems dealing with him. I take no...

Re: Acherontia atropos feeding

Don't give up! I raised a brood of atropos last year. I started them on potato, they ran through that and I finished them on olive. It was stressful though until I found an alternate for the potato they'd accept. One can never tell until you try. They may be more receptive to switching food plant af...
