Re: Observation -> proposal -> sanity check: Papilio puddling/ ground feeding
I don’t have an answer, but it seems reasonable to posit that they puddle as soon as they can to load up on mineral salts, and once they have fuelled up, this could last them a long time (perhaps they only need to do this once?).

Re: Laurel Swallowtail (Papilio palamedes)
Years ago when I was in Florida, I found 2 eggs on Persea. Unfortunately both were parasitized by small wasps.

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II
No brevicauda, very frustrating. I went to 3 dunes, perfect habitat, abundant food plant, but no eggs, larvae, empty eggshells, or evidence of leaf damage from caterpillars. I am not bad at locating eggs/caterpillars. In fact, I think I am pretty good at this. However, I couldn’t find anything this ...

Re: Clear, self ballasted, 450w M.V. Bulbs
I was in New Brunswick this week. Not being able to locate a clear self ballasted MV bulb, I bought a 50W LED light at 365 nm. I did not get a spectral analysis and I have no side to side (or even night to night) comparison with incandescent, MV, or MH light sources. With those caveats out of the wa...

I am in New Brunswick right now. Peak canadensis season it would seem. Saw several driving today and even hit one. None captured. No ova located. The hunt continues.

That’s impressive. I had no idea they could survive for so long like that. Good luck with the lucanid search!

To each their own, but I also do not keep what I cannot spread. In my freezer, I have 3 specimens from this month and that’s it.

Chuck, that photo of the ISQ glaucus, are you sure? It, and the specimen above it look like glaucus. Were they captured when canadensis was still considered a subspecies of glaucus?

In the video, that’s not a two tailed swallowtail, but rather P. glaucus. That video was shot in Maryland.

Re: Latest LED/UV Bug Light
I also have a 365nm 50W LED light. Will be using it this summer for the first time. I went with 365nm because it’s supposed to be the best for leps, based on what I have read and personal comments from a couple of other people. 365nm is one of the major emission lines in the mercury spectrum, so it ...

P.S. I have 16 Morpho from bought pupae, they hatched 2 years ago. No oil yet. also some M. achilles without problems. But i have some green Papilio where the oil destory the color.
