The "Spiny Lobster" Katydid from Peru. Panoploscelis specularis. Amazing predatory species. All of these photos are of the same male and female... Rather reminiscent of the giant wētās (Deinacrida spp.) of New Zealand (below), though perhaps less bulky, but even more spiny! - https://blog...

That bromius (=chrapkowskoides), especially, is quite unique! I can't recall ever having seen one like that. Me neither, an amazing aberration. I assume you meant by the above that the name P. bromius is a junior homonym and the valid species name is Papilio chrapkowskoides . However, the way you w...

The incredible and rather large "bronze armored" cricket - Bradyporus dasypus from Macedonia. First photo is my own, second photo is from the internet, to show size... WOW - had not heard of this cricket before! I wouldn't have expected a large, metallic species like this to exist in Mace...

Re: Colorful Rare Orthopterans
I don't know the name of these, but they are one of the rarest and most unusual pairs I have ever acquired. These are absolutely perfect specimens. All of the "notches" are natural mimicry. I haven't seen any of these spread but there appears to be a lot of yellow in the hindwings. from P...

Wow!.... those 2 photos of humungous tropical flies, in hand, are actually larger than some of the mosquitoes we have up here! Very impressive, I think even I would do a doubletake/slight freakout if one of those suddenly dropped down on me.... TFP John K. :geek: Mydas clavatus is pro...

Re: In a cellophane "prison" for 47 years
Thanks for the Mr. Glanz pic. I've often wondered the same thing...what exactly was Glanz relaxing fluid? I recall it wasn't too irritating or unpleasant to the nose or eyes. I can't remember actually using it or if it was more effective than plain water. I thought it was supposed to be applied dir...

Zopherus nodulosus, USA. I'm not sure if this is considered a scarab (maybe Teneb?), but it's interesting for its almost impenetrable elytra and "tar-sprinkled" appearance... Zopherus nodulosus haldemani - this subspecies is endemic to TX (possibly ranging into MX), and while not uncommon...

...I first became aware of S. grandis when I bought a 1969 book, long ago in my youth, entitled "The Pictorial Encyclopedia of Insects" by V.J. Stanek. On pg. 52 - photo #71, is an old B. & W. photo of S. grandis resting on an outstretched hand. I was completely amazed by that old pho...

The giant helmeted katydid (Siliquofera grandis), one of the largest orthopterans in the world - These used to be so readily available. Not anymore! Wish I had bought more when they were so common and relatively cheap! It seems as though this species should actually be more commonly available than ...
