Re: Recognizing hybrids as a unique taxon?

And that makes sense. We have plenty of examples where a species arose from hybridization in the past. It makes sense that a single individual that’s a hybrid has no name, but hybrid population stable over time and space can be named.

Re: Recognizing hybrids as a unique taxon?

Recombination hybridization is a well recognized pathway for speciation over long time scales. Whether or not a particular population of hybrid origin gets to be a species though, according to humans, is probably subjective and contingent upon what’s “fashionable” at the time. I wonder if Adam can s...

Yes Adam, he does mention on his website “Postdoctoral fellow, Dipartimento di Biologia, Università Degli Studi di Padova, Italy.” My previous post was just to show that he is no longer working at the CNC in Ottawa.

From his personal website: From 2011 to 2019 he was an assistant curator of entomology at the Canadian National Collection of Insects, Arachnids and Nematodes. Since 2019 he is a wildlife research and management consultant for the private sector in Ottawa, Canada. He has authored or co-authored more...

Haha sorry Chuck, I misread your post. When you said you were unaware of a single dark MST, I misread that as “aware.” My bad.

Re: Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (P. glaucus) (dark phase/form)

In Butterflies of Canada, they mention the rare all black female canadensis found in NFLD. They reference Morris but I have never read the original source of this info, nor have I ever seen pictures of this. This sounds more like an occasional mutant than a distinct colour form that you can consiste...

Re: Bozano series Papilionidae IV published

One of the authors, V. Nazari, works at the CNC in Ottawa. He actually gave me a tour of their collection a few years ago when I visited. If all else fails, you can probably email him and he could probably tell you how to get the book in NA.

Is the variation clinal? I wonder if anyone has looked into the genetics to see if they should be different subspecies?

No, not all species have a liquid dump. Some have one last pellet that’s sort of loose. Others have more or less normal frass until the very end.

Yes, based on your location, you have rumiko. All the cresphontes I have seen have bright red osmeteria.

The osmeterium of P. cresphontes is bright red. Is the color difference with rumiko consistent?

Re: Permathrin- kills more than just ticks

Permethrin acts on neurons. It interferes with sodium channels to disrupt the function of neurons, and causes muscles to spasm, culminating in paralysis and death. It is not a carcinogen. I have never used it because I am not out much, but it does not seem too worrisome. Skin absorption is low, abo...

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II

Yeah, seems to be an exceptionally good year for them. The long and thin tail is a great aberration on that specimen. I also noticed the claspers before seeing your comment. This is a canadensis-like trait. It used to be thought that MST had pure yellow claspers, like glaucus. But now it seems that ...

Re: Any Thysania agrippina experts out there?

If the purpose of the frenulum is to couple the fore and hind wings, why is it that when we pin and spread a moth, positioning the forewing doesn’t automatically move the hindwing up? Is the coupling just that weak? As for why males and females differ, Chris Grinter discusses a possible hypothesis o...

Re: Observation -> proposal -> sanity check: Papilio puddling/ ground feeding

I don’t have an answer, but it seems reasonable to posit that they puddle as soon as they can to load up on mineral salts, and once they have fuelled up, this could last them a long time (perhaps they only need to do this once?).
