Re: Unusual Diurnal Moth Behavior?

Sataspes tagalica I only have seen this species in northern Thailand twice although it is not easy one to spot. I collected two specimens but one get quickly ruined in the net. This has to be quickly transfer to a killing jar in order to have a good specimen. 97D3A42B-C635-4269-B91D-6BCFD2A9CF5A.jp...

Re: Unusual Diurnal Moth Behavior?

I observed Sataspes species diving into the stream in the mountains of northern Thailand.
They fly fast few times diving into water and then rest on near by vegetation.

Very good to see you once again Billg ! ☺️ Hope we see more of you in the future.... Those are some terrific specimens.🎉👏 Thanks Trehopr1 and Adam. The insect collecting last year was really terrible and my emphasis switched to more of my tropical fish, becoming a new grandpa for the first time, le...

Re: The Blue Duke Bassarona (Euthalia) durga

I suppose I elected in my own personal use to use the month name over the Roman numerals. I also use month names or unambiguous abbreviations rather than Roman numerals on my labels. Adam. I also use abbreviations of months in English but I stay away from new American version: MA,MR, JN JL instead ...

Re: It is difficult to maintain a complete grey butterfly

The fragile long tail process of the small gray butterfly is easily damaged during collection. I think that our new member is trying to say that the tails of this species can easily be broken when catching it. Adam. It seems like that but in reality H.amasa tails are quite flexible and can be bend ...

Re: It is difficult to maintain a complete grey butterfly

This is Hypolycaena amasa
It is quite common species in Thailand and with little care can be achieved without damage, it is also possible to spread previously dried specimen unlike some skippers which give a hard time.

Pyrops candelaria This is very similar species to P.spinolae I found it in Central/east Laos. Their behaviour and camouflage is incredible. When disturb feeding they are not flying off but simply moving slowly on the tree trunk so they blend in with the background. First picture shows when I approa...

Re: Cerambycidae of "weird " appearance

Very cool (& fragile looking!) spider mimic Cerambycids pr. from Thailand Cerambycid Beetle. Spider mimics pr, Thailand.jpg John K. Cerania bosci. This is quite common species in Thailand. The males resemble a drone, they fly slowly with the legs wide stretched in all direction. Easy to net it ...

Re: Colorful Rare Orthopterans

These are the monsters among the insect world of our era. My specimens came to light trap in French Guiana. Tropidacris dux legs are so powerful that one holding it has to be very careful not to get pierced by its spikes. The wingspan is whooping 228mm! Titanacris albipes is about half of the size o...

I found this, though it's 2019 and only on Speyeria. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=4594&context=uop_etds Right up front they state they couldn't do a more comprehensive analysis due to lack of samples (specimens). It would be interesting to know what other Nym...

Re: Dominican Republic Phoebis

Here are 2 specimens of which I presume must be Phoebis editha (?). Hopefully, someone can confirm. These are probably my best examples although I have another 6 or 7 of a little less quality. Most everything I saw of these were fairly well trashed. https://i.imgur.com/U03FQYz.jpg I don’t think the...

This location is on my list but apparently Laos is not as safe as it was few years ago and to be in remote areas like this one need few locals as guards and best with the gun.

Fantastic self- capture Paul ! 🎉👏☺️ I never saw this species when I was in the D.R. but, I have seen a couple offered in the last 2 years on eBay which unfortunately garnered some surprising prices with all the bidding. Simply splendid species. ☺️ I just came back today from my trip to DR near Sama...

Re: Exquisite Birdwings in Slo-mo

I watched that alexandrae video a couple more times and I think that it must be a newly emerged, wings just dried butterfly. As it sits on the flower its proboscis is still curled most of the video, although it can be seen extended later in the video. I think the part in the beginning where it is f...
