Re: Prepona

Superb specimens Hewi ! Never mind the Prepona , the new avatar is amazing. I notice that there is one of the insects in his avatar currently listed on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/165542414015?hash=item268b18c6bf%3Ag%3AVwAAAOSw1dVisc0I&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&camp...

Re: Argyrophorus argenteus

A couple of colleagues of mine saw them in 2001, i was with them in Peru but came home when they moved on to Chile. They found them in several places and they told me that when they flew in sunny conditions it was like somebody was continually flashing a mirror in their eyes.

Re: Macoun's Arctic

It would be nice to know the name of the species, as "Macoun's arctic" will mean nothing to anyone outside North America, and I suspect quite a few inside. It looks like it could be some sort of Oeneis.

Re: Peruvian Butterflies

I had many dealings with Tony in the past and he was one of the most reliable Peruvian dealers. He seemed to just disappear a few years ago, I didn't know that he was active again.

The abdomen does look quite fat - but does it have claspers?
Hi Bob. Just taken this photo. Definitely a male.
Agreed!

Re: Recognized publication outlets?

I usually publish in Zootaxa, mainly because it is one of the few that is well-respected, peer-reviewed and free to publish. These last two are particularly important to me.

Re: Madagascar giant swallowtail (Pharmacophagus antenor)

I've had some good specimens from Ken over the years too. I also saw him at the show in London, and the previous week in Paris. In fact, in London I managed to reverse the tables and sell him some specimens!

Re: The Joined Underwing Catocala junctura)

I can't help you much with this one, I only have 3 males in my drawer, plus a few more spares. I did have some eggs this year but unfortunately lost all the larvae. Anyway, here's a photo of mine, with a single male of the rather rare C. texanae underneath, followed by a couple of female C. carissim...

Re: Darling Underwing (Catocala cara)

Yes, the small larvae are very quick but they're much better behaved when they get bigger. As I don't have access to trees I can sleeve, I have to do them all in tupperware boxes, which causes high losses due to viral or bacterial infections. I was lucky to rear a good series of concumbens . This ye...

Re: Darling Underwing (Catocala cara)

Thanks Dave. Quite a few of them (the ones with pale green labels), I reared myself.

I particularly like the aberrant concumbens female with the very broad hindwing band.

Phil retired about 15 years ago but I still see him when he pops in from time to time.

John's also written quite a lot of butterfly books!

Nice! I had a breeding colony of these going for about 8 years back in the 90s. Even though they originally came from about 8 wild-collected larvae they never showed any signs of weakness due to inbreeding.

I'm sure a few of us know John Tennent well. I regularly bump into him at the Natural history Museum.
