Re: Papilio from the Solomon Islands

Chuck wrote: Thu Aug 25, 2022 12:11 pm Adam is correct.

Below: Papilio erskinei are the bottom two, right most row. Papilio bridgei michae is the middle row, second from top. P erskinei is unique with the red spots; none of the Papilio bridgei ssp have red spots.

adamcotton wrote: Thu Aug 25, 2022 8:21 am Maramasike Island (note spelling) is immediately south of Malaita, too far north for P. erskinei which is found on San Cristobal and Ugi. This is probably a female of P. bridgei michae.

Adam.

Papilio from the Solomon Islands

This female was sold to me by Chuck Ianni a few years ago as a female P erskinei. I am not sure this is correct. Possibly a female P bridgei michae?
Sadly missing part of an antennae when I got it.

A lovely form of this species. Those are very nice specimens Dunc. This species does not fly in my vicinity but I have reared it from larvae on a couple of occasions. I have yet to produce a valezina form from reared stock. The caterpillars are voracious eaters & consume food plants at pace. Be ...

More lovely specimens superbly set with impeccable data plus some great information about them. I have Larsen's two volumes Butterflies of West Africa but not the Vande Weghe Papillons du Gabon.

Re: Cymothoe

I wonder if that should be "Bambari"? I'm not finding "Bambiri" online. If it is Bambari, that would seem to be an interesting location quite north of where publications have the species' range, and in a region which is much more savanna than forest. I agree that it should be Ba...

The red species of Cymothoe are particularly nice I think. Two male C coccinata & the same two males with two females Two pairs of C distincta trolliae. All from Central African Republic. C. distincta trolliae is a synonym of the nominate ssp. Do you have specific data for the coccinata ? None ...

I'm now officially out of paradichlorobenzine and naphthalene and as both substances are banned in the UK I'm either selling up or I have to find an alternative, my collection is too valuable in monetary terms and in memories to let dermestids have their way so I'm open to EFFECTIVE suggestions as ...

Could not agree more with what you say about the beauty of this particular species. Think the males of the nominate subspecies are really spectacular.
I have an old pair of T prattorum. That's a lovely one too as you say.

Beautiful specimens. I think this is a lovely species & , as you say, surprisingly large. Cymothoe in general are beautiful & a much underrated genus in my opinion.
Interesting. Your flag shows Canada but you are in The Democratic Republic of the Congo?
