You have opened up a minefield with this genus! The genus certainly lives up to its name. This box contains specimens recently off the setting boards before starting to be sorted and identified. Here in Thailand we have genus Mycalesis which looks rather similar. Some species have a dry season form with small or vestigial eye spots and large spots similar to the bottom photo above in the wet season form (July-September). Adam. I have quite a few males & a couple of females from Uganda which are similar to the one in your photograph.
This male from Kenya is more richly coloured than my South African & Ugandan specimens. Also slightly more rounder in wing shape.

Correction. I posted a picture of these two Colotis aurigineus earlier in this thread as two males from Tanzania. They are in fact a pair. The one shown verso is a female. As you can see from the data they come from Malawi & not Tanzania as first stated.

The only photo I have of one of my males. I got a couple of pairs from Ken Thorne in Canada a while back.
