Re: A parade of Catocala moths

Bill, did you rear the C. marmoratas or are they wild caught? They are certainly beautiful.

Re: A parade of Catocala moths

Trehopr1, just happens that I house C. cara and C. relicta in the same extra large drawer. Both species are common here, I can get you some this summer if you want.

Re: A parade of Catocala moths

The yellow amatrix and C.hermia and C. luciana are not from Ontario, those I acquired from a collector in Saskatchewan.

Re: A parade of Catocala moths

Trehopr1, a beautiful series of catocala. And you seem to get a great number of species in your area, a few that never stray this far north. Here in southern and central Ontario there are something like 47 recorded species, but some of those are likely rare strays/one offs. I have personally collect...

Re: Even common species can offer subtle surprises

The males seem to have less variation, at least here in the north, but bold and beautiful orange most all. Note the aberrant We also get philodice and interior. There are two or three aberrants in this drawer, pretty easy to spot.

Re: Even common species can offer subtle surprises

Eurytheme are one of my favourites, especially the females. From just a hint of orange to full on orange. And different border widths, some with much darker shades, they are so variable and beautiful.

Re: Net bag color?

My favourite net is a Paradox 26" diameter with Khaki mesh so thin (but non tear) that you can see the butterfly clearly, and when you drop this beast over a group of puddling Papilio canadensis, the mesh is so lightweight that it stays up longer so the butterflies can fly upward. With most net...

Re: Anybody purchased from Insectrum?

Thanks Pierre, didn't know he had an eBay site as well. Sent him a message through eBay and he responded that the Insectrum UK site checkout is disabled for now. And unfortunately he does not have any more of what I was looking for.

Re: White-M Hairstreak (Parrhasius m-album)

Trehopr1 - I wish I could answer your species label question. A couple of years ago I downloaded a labelling program and converted all my manually written specimen labels and species labels to more professional looking labels. Once I was done, I deleted the downloaded software as I was concerned the...

Re: White-M Hairstreak (Parrhasius m-album)

I personally caught one of these beauties back in 1987, on a visit to Vernon's Anita Springs home in Louisiana. It was a mothing weekend, but Vernon allowed us to collect during the day on his DSCF7089.JPG property. That's when I came across the female (top one). The other pair are ex-ova which I wa...

Anybody purchased from Insectrum?

I tried placing an order from this website and all is well in selecting specimens and loading into cart. Problem occurs when trying to process payment, always get an error page saying 0-reCAPTCHA.... which I believe is an anti robot gate. I have sent an email to their contact email, no response as y...

Re: White-M Hairstreak (Parrhasius m-album)

Isn't it funny how you can go into the field well prepared with everything to catch and secure your prize, and see nothing of significance. But then you come across a great prize when you least expect it and are ill prepared for a capture. Good on you for improvising in "the moment" and ma...

Moths of North America (MONA) Catocala

Does anyone know if the MONA series of publications has yet covered the catocala species of moths? I have seen various references to such a publication due to come out in the past few years, but have not yet seen it, or heard that it is out.

Re: Fumigant Lifetime

Agree with Jshuey, as I keep my roughly 80 drawers in my basement. I would be concerned that 80 chunks of no pest strip might be a health concern for family that spends lots of time in the basement, obviously not in the room with the bugs, but what's to keep it confined to that particular room. I us...

Enough already, with the fake aberrations

A couple of eBay sellers have been flooding the market with aberrant specimens created by injecting chemicals (tungstate I believe) into fresh pupa. Although this may seem a harmless method of making money, it waters down the thrill of finding an aberrant in the field. I for one have always kept a s...

Beautiful drawers all. Mine are all by family, but with a mixed bag, the eye must linger longer to take it all in, superb.
