Re: Papilio mechowi & Papilio gallienus
Yes Tom, not so complicated .... litterature is full of confusion and complicated but the field situation seems clearer. I also had some difficulties in the past to find the answer (because of litterature), it seems now the situation is clearer at least the better existing for the congolese ones. I ...

Re: Papilio mechowi & Papilio gallienus
the true is not complicate. - the verso HW margin of gallienus is black and well marked (separated from base and discal area light brown) - the same area in mechowi is of the same color as the rest of the wing except nervures and internervures that are blackened. In mean, yellow HW band is more regu...

Re: Tithoes (fmr. Acanthophorus) maculatus
what are the localities of these Tithoes ?
yes Pierre is right, 1 and 3 are confinis, but 2 can be frontalis or maculatus (two close sp, locality may be important as photos are not always sufficient)

Re: iNaturalist
I use this site sometimes for my groups. It is true that nomenclature is not at the top despite being at good level. Many of the corrections I made (quite all) were followed and sometimes these corrections have been made in the database following my remarks. It is something dynanmic. What is amazing...

Re: Butterfly wing patterns & "junk" DNA
The difference with hybrids, at least between species, is that the offspring are normally infertile; but with CRISPR modified specimens their genes should be transmissible. These should never be allowed into nature, just as live specimens of non-native species and subspecies should never be release...

Re: Pseudacraea
the true can be diverse. D'Abrera's work is just to compile an illustrate catalogue based on his opinion (that seems sometime strange an unscientific). Having had discussion with him, I can tell that his predicator function and creationist thinkings were more important for him. For Hecq the problem ...

Pseudacraea lucretia gamae Joicey & Talbot, 1927. Two males from Principe Island. This island is off the coast of western Africa. I have seen this listed as a species (Pseudacraea gamae), rather than a subspecies. This is in “Butterflies of the World” Part 16. Nymphalidae VII, Pseudacraea. By J...

That's not preussi , which has a differently shaped sub-apical band & does not have a purple sheen. Looks much more like E. uganda too me, but of course this genus is a difficult one to ID. Thomas, the picture is saturated with a red component marked. The purple effect may be not not so strong ...
