Re: Question about pinning spread Lepidoptera

Are you certain they don’t have existing pin holes? Have you checked with a magnifying glass or microscope? It seems unlikely they would have been spread originally without a pin through the thorax. Could be that someone removed the pins in order to store them in the manner which you received them.

Appears to be a Saga species - maybe Saga natoliae. They are quite large and “wingless”.

Re: USA Insect Drawers

What is the main advantage of plastazote, over something such as foamcore? Do pins not leave visible holes in plastazote, if removed? It also grips the pin quite well, despite the fact that the pin is very easy to insert. Just a wonderful material in every way, including appearance - it has no refl...

Re: USA Insect Drawers

I think they only sell the "finer & whiter": https://pinitentomology.com/products/insect-drawer-authentic-plastazote-foam-insert Yes that does appear to be it! I didn’t see that photo when I checked their website a while back. Perhaps it was added since then. Thanks for the reply!

Re: USA Insect Drawers

I ordered some plastazote from them. They were very nice and the order was delivered promptly. I plan to become a regular customer. Are they selling the higher quality “finer” and “whiter” version, or the coarser one? I can’t remember if Bioquip referred to both of them as plastazote, but they had ...

Lantana is everywhere here in the Phoenix area - it can definitely take the most brutal heat and sun, with only moderate watering!

The new Canna is stunning!

Re: Unidentified Insect

Dear Panancanthus Wow what a beautiful Insect, the phymatheus grasshopper, Nature in the Insectworld is showing amazing forms and colours. It is near to what I saw, but the orange was different and the pattern had a triangle form with a frame of green around. Can it be that the milkweed grasshopper...

Re: Unidentified Insect

Possibly a species of Phymateus grasshopper. Did you see orange only when it was in flight? With a Phymateus grasshopper, you would see no orange on the wings until it was either flying, or lifting its wings in preparation to fly. It is also possible it may lift its wings if threatened. Regardless, ...

Re: The plus side of winter

One of my least favorites here in Arizona is the giant crab spider. They “teleport” on any surface. Similar to a huntsman I suspect. I’ve had a couple of them run across my hand while doing yard work. Takes a couple years off my life every time!

Re: Insectrum UK

I purchased only one specimen from him on eBay once, and the specimen was far smaller than the description. The description also stated that the images showed the actual specimen for sale, which was absolutely not the case. In the end, after quite a few excuses from him, he offered to give a refund ...

Re: What do Hesperidologists dream of?

“Coleopterists I'm pretty sure all dream about great big things with big horns or pincers, no matter what their micro-focus is.” I’ve only dreamt of highly “exaggerated” specimens of brightly colored beetles such as Buprestids and Chrysinas. Not extra large - just extra fantastical shapes and colors...

Re: NY Man charged with smuggling birdwings

Well, that's unfortunate. I bought from Dr. Limmer , the specimens he listed on ebay were common Ornithoptera as other sellers listed the same species, I know he had other, more expensive species he didn't list on ebay. He was, or is a little gruffy, but I had no problems dealing with him. I take n...

Re: Arsenura ponderosa guianensis

Trehopr1 - You have acquired quite a special moth there! In my experience this species is very seldom offered. I thought you might enjoy seeing this PAIR which I had, but eventually sold many years ago. The females are almost never seen offered (again, just based on my own experience) - shown here i...
