Re: Moving/ downsizing, donating collection, books, getting old
"Indeed - I recently helped a friend move a magnificent collection of catocala and US butterflies to a university. It was time, and he was afraid of everything Chuck mentions. The upside here in the US, is that he and his lovely wife were really surprised about the tax benefits they will get fo...

Re: What's up with US Saturniidae?
Wow, very discouraging no to mention distressing. I know some parasitoids released for gypsy moth control (now known as spongy moth) have negatively impacted saturnid populations in the NE. This and aerial spraying for gypsy moth control (which I hear are bad this year in the NE) perhaps are both fa...

Re: Moving/ downsizing, donating collection, books, getting old
An inspiring read - https://www.nzgeo.com/stories/fly-fly/. Sounds like a great collection and donation but the NHM, London, has its work cut out for it to put actual data labels on all 20,000 specimens! "Each of McArthur’s butterflies is accompanied by a tiny printed QR code, and scanning it ...

Re: Moving/ downsizing, donating collection, books, getting old
I have been pondering some of these same issues as well lately. In addition to finding a suitable location to donate a collection, it’s also imperative that your spouse, family, or other heirs know your wishes in case something should happen to you unexpectedly. Too many collections have become orph...

Re: Moving/ downsizing, donating collection, books, getting old
We have all along been pursued by museums far and near. At this point, we are tired. Vernon, if I may ask, what plans do you have for such an extensive and valuable collection and all the equipment and supplies you've accumulated over the years once you're no longer able to or interested in maintai...

It's pretty clear now. Apparently this post is another fake one, presumably, in consideration, by an android intelligence. Having given you the benefit of the doubt originally, I will be weighing the possibilities when answering future dubious entries. It's not funny. You are not actually fooling a...

Re: Light collecting
I'll tell you what - I'm headed to Panama with a Lepi-LED next week. I got it for evening entertainment mostly (since all I really care about are Hesperiidae). I'll run it for sure, and let you know how it works. John Can you please give us an update on how the Lepi-LED worked for you in Panama? In...

For those interested in the recent research on why light collecting works in the first place (now known as the dorsal light response in insects), the original paper can be found here (no pay wall): https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-44785-3 From the Abstract: Explanations of why nocturnal in...

Re: Light collecting
Two LED collecting lights, both developed by entomologists have recently become available. I don't have experience with either one but they look worth checking out. The Entolight was developed by two entomologists in Arizona and is designed for ease of use, durability, portability and is reasonably ...

The link won't display for some reason but a search for "collapsible pocket insect net" on Amazon has one for $16.99. Another option is below. https://www.amazon.com/Advanced-Butterfly-Crushable-Detachable-Push-Fit/dp/B0CBLV98KP?th=1 https://ecologysupplies.com/products/collapsible-pocket-...

Re: Where to find Definitive Taxonomies?
Wikipedia actually has a good overview of insects including their evolution and phylogeny and a classification which includes some recent revisionary works with references. Whether it's the most current and up to date classification I couldn't say but worth a look. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inse...

I just wanted to mention a possible alternative to the traditional No Pest Strips mentioned here. Hercon Vaportape II has the same active ingredient (Dichlorvos,10% vs. 18.6%) but in a more user-friendly, 1" x 4" thin strip and easier to cut. Vaportape II is intended to use as a fumigant i...

From the rather blurry video, it appears to be a rove beetle, family Staphylinidae. Likely came in from outdoors. Not a worry, completely harmless. https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=567877806&rlz=1CACNAW_enUS929US929&q=staphylinidae&tbm=isch&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj9...

The Insects Nest, Luodong, Taiwan
A colleague and I recently had the opportunity to visit the Insects Nest, the beetle shop of Andy Cheng in Luodong, Taiwan. I'd never been to a beetle, or any kind of insect shop before and came away very impressed. The unassuming store front houses a bright showroom filled with shelves upon shelv...

I recently found and ordered some insect pins from this Canadian supplier, Moth and Beetle. They have all the major brands, Austerlitz, Kostal, Ento Sphinx, Kabourek etc. at reasonable prices. A link to their insect pins and a little bit about them follows: https://mothandbeetle.com/insect-pins/ Wel...

Re: The Kyushu University Museum collection is online
My Japanese is a bit rusty. The specimens are fantastic, I like the following best http://db.museum.kyushu-u.ac.jp/entomology/?wb=det&cl=9&it=394 But Adam is right, without names it's not good for identification. Since my Japanese is so bad, I can't see if there's a listing of the names any...
