Papilio nephelus ssp. from Java

I got a specimen of Papilio nephelus from a dealer and he told me it was from Java. I' ve never seen the subspecies from Java (might be nominate?), but this one seems similar as ssp. sunatus from Malay Peninsula. So I think it might be mis-marking. I tried to sign the subspecies of P. nephelus and P...

Re: Papilio syfanius from Ganzi Sichuan

The type locality of Papilio maackii han (Yoshino, 1997) is 'Mt. Wuyishan, Fujiang prov., China', and it is considered to be the senior synonym of shimogorii Fujioka, 1997 (type locality: 'Mt. Omeishan, Sichuan, China'), i.e. han is the valid subspecies name for P. maackii occurring at least betwee...

Re: Papilio syfanius from Ganzi Sichuan

Of course this is the nominate subspecies. There is considerable variation from specimens with completely dark hindwings to those with a distinct white postdiscal patch in the nominate ssp, but the majority tend to be dark. Ssp. albosyfanius mainly has a distinct white hindwing postdiscal patch. Ad...

Re: Papilio memnon ssp. ♀ from Indonesia

If you look at the map of China Lianjiang County consists of a group of islands off the coast of Fujian, which are currently controlled by Taiwan, if I understand correctly. P. agenor agenor occurs on those islands, but not on Taiwan Island itself. This specimen is very strange, I have never seen a...

Re: Papilio memnon ssp. ♀ from Indonesia

[quote =adamcotton post_id=8893 time=1705053803 user_id=59] It is very difficult to be certain which subspecies this female belongs to without locality (island is enough) data since the obvious differences are in the males. Females of most subspecies are rather variable whereas males are not. This s...

Papilio memnon ssp. ♀ from Indonesia

A female Papilio memnon from Indonesia. It belongs to my friend but she does not know the accurate location nether the ssp. So which ssp. could it be based on its phenotype? Thank you. She also showed me a tailless spring brood one, and two tailed individuals (summer and spring brood) signed ssp. he...

I moved the above post to a new topic so people can see it more easily. Papilio arjuna

I have a problem about Papilio arjuna ssp. herein. My friend purchased a specimen of P. arjuna (the label signed ' Papilio paris ssp. arjuna ) collected from Mt. Lawu of E. Java. I checked the book of Achillides but it only signed ' P. paris ssp.'. To my knowledge, the specimen from E. Java might be...

Papilio syfanius from Ganzi Sichuan

A specimen of male Papilio syfanius caught from Ganzi, Sichuan of China. I used to read from some literature that the nominate subspecies distrbuted in Sichuan, and the ssp. albosyfanius mainly distrbuted in NW. and C. Yunnan and also S. Sichuan. So I don't known whether it is nominate subspecies or...

Here is one of my boxes of ssp. rumanzovia with a variety of different female forms: rumanzovia box s.jpg Some are similar to ssp. deiphontes but they are not that ssp., which comes from N. Moluccas. If they come from the Philippines (except the small island chain SW of Mindanao) then they belong t...

Re: A specimen of female Papilio deiphobus

Your friend's female is almost certainly the nominate subspecies, from Ceram or Ambon. Adam. Thanks for your reply ^0^, and that is very helpful. So many forms for ssp.  rumanzovia . I saw a label writing ' Papilio rumanzovia f. deiphontes ' before and the phenotype is much similar with figure 3B a...

A specimen of female Papilio deiphobus

A specimen of female Papilio deiphobus from my friend, and I supposed that it might be nominated subspecies compared with the specimen from the museum (figure 3A). However I have some doubts herein. 1. How many subspecies based on recent research? 2. I have seen several pictures of female specimens ...

Adam is always very helpful. I'd not worry too much about misID, that happens. I can't tell you the number of times some sub-project in my research has eaten many hours of work, and then I discover that the work had already been done, the paper is on my computer, and I'd simply forgotten that I'd r...

Re: Papilio polytes ssp. & ♀ forms

Papilio hipponous is a separate species from the Philippines, not directly related to P. polytes but in the fuscus -group. Another species related to P. hipponous is P. prexaspes from the Malay Peninsula, Borneo and Indochina, with a subspecies in Hainan - bowringi . This subspecies is rather hard ...

I know whether it is just a synonym of some sp. or ssp.?

Re: Papilio memnon ♀ from Bali with yellow patch on tails

Yes this is f. achates . The yellow scales on the tails are unusual, even present on the upperside, although rather faint. The model for this form, Losaria coon , does not occur on Bali, so I assume this form is rarer there. Adam. Thanks Adam ^0^. I' ve seen a P. bianor specimen (might be ssp. triu...

Thank you Adam ^0^. I have never seen it, ether. But I have seen a tailless male Papilio polytes previously, not alphenor.

Papilio agenor f. distantianus with very very SMALL tails

One of my friends showed her specimens of Papilio memnon on Baidu Post Bar (ID: 饼干和大饼) and one of them attracted me and I mirror the picture here. It is female Papilio agenor, and I suppose it might be f. distantianus according to the pattern on hindwings but its tails are really very small (I think...
