I can think of two more named after him.

Re: Japanese collector just arrested in Costa Rica

A news report in Japan says the guy's name is Motoaki Koyama. Motoaki is his given name. I don't know him, but I found his name in a Who's Who of Japanese insect enthusiasts compiled by the late Chotaro Nishiyama back in 1990. The report here is a bit more detailed, and quotes the total value of the ...

Re: NEW : The Insect Label Decipherer

It seems like a great app. However, to ensure, you might as well have it checked with a native speaker of the language used for the label.

The app failed to read 犹, which is not an often-used character, skipped it, and translated it as "flowers." 犹花 is the name of a place.

So the label should be ...

Having said what I wanted to say, we still need to solve our problem of what to do with our collection after we are gone. I hear many people here are having a hard time finding places to house their collections after their death. Major museums don't have funds to make storage places for ...

Thank you for your advice. However, the environments we are in are very different. As a result, approaches to this hobby are different. Living in central Tokyo, my collection will never grow to 1 million. I haven't counted how many specimens I have, but it's less than thirty thousand. I ...

As Christof said, I mount wasps upside down. You can put all antennae, legs, and wings of a wasp on one plane surface. All you need is a piece of styrofoam with a shallow groove.

Polyura dehanii carabus was described by Etsuzo Tsukada in his Butterflies of the South East Asian Islands, Part V, Nymphalidae (II) back in 1991.

Re: A pair of Papilio agenor thunbergii from Tokyo

They reached Tokyo about 20 years ago. You can see them in parks in central Tokyo, although they are not as common as P. xuthus or P. protenor . They are not tailed in Japan, but tailed females are caught on Amami Oshima Island, Okinawa Island, and in other places from time to time. As Adam says ...

Re: Papilio maackii maackii

It is not a hybrid. It is an artificially made aberration of P. maackii . Some aberrations are made by putting newly formed pupae in the fridge for some time. I also heard you can make spectacular aberrations by injecting a certain kind of chemical in pupae. I don't know how this particular specimen ...

Re: Urgent help with chrysalids

It is a common practice here in Japan to use Polyvinyl acetate glue, like Elmer's glue, to stick pupae of lycaenids on a piece of paper. The picture shows empty cases of Chrysozephyrus ataxus , Artopoetes pryeri , and Favonius cognatus . They all successfully emerged. It didn't cause any harm to the ...

Re: Which tropical hardwood is best for insect boxes?

Teak wood must be absolutely dry before making the boxes, otherwise the wood will split. Normally it must be professionally dried, and after that it will be safe to use to store specimens. Note it is very heavy.

I actually think you don't need to use hardwood. I will ask what type of wood those ...
