Re: Baird's swallowtail - side to side wing size variation
Just how nature works. Most things are not perfectly symmetric. People, for example, will have arms and legs that are different by a few mm. Some people have differences that are much more pronounced, perhaps 1-2 cm, which will affect the tilt of their pelvis and posture.

Re: refrigeration of adult lepidoptera and lifespan
Yes, I forgot to mention humidity is a factor and fridges dry things out. I store bugs in almost airtight containers and ziploc bag them. They won’t asphyxiate.

Re: refrigeration of adult lepidoptera and lifespan
I don’t have numbers on fertility but I have done this with silkmoths and they can live a month or more in the fridge. Their metabolism isn’t zero, so over time they do get weaker and use their fat stores.

Re: What is the oldest EXISTING species of butterfly?
Point taken. However, I think the prima facie interpretation of the question is, which extant species has been around the longest and is relatively unchanged. People often say that modern humans have been around for 200,000 years. We descended from animals that were around, say, 300,000 years ago ...

Yeah the paper was basically a checklist of Alberta moths….it was more a book than paper. 549 pages total!

Re: Smerinthus cerisyi vs. ophthalmica
I have not had a chance to look up the paper elevating ophthalmica to species status. However, in the Hawkmoth book by Tuttle, page 115, he states “Comstock and Dammers (1943b) conclusively established through rearing that ophthalmica is a morph of cerisyi.”

If someone buys your car, they get all the individual “sub-car” components. If the seats belong to the car, they now belong to the new owner.

Re: Hello, I have a weird question. Can a dying beetle set off a smoke alarm?
Doubt it’s beetles. Finding dead bugs in a garage is common. Even when the alarm isn’t going off, if you look, you will probably find a dead bug here or there.

Re: Battus philenor hirsuta
Oh I know Chuck, not saying this would be easy. I just wanted to put the bug in someone’s ear (no pun intended) in case anyone here is within range of hirsuta. I would do it if I had any specimens or plans to travel to Cali.
