Re: Collecting in Vietnam

is it safe to just send the speciems I collect back to the U.S in the mail? Instead of going through the hassle of bringing them in luggage and dealing with customs Officially, the export of insects from Vietnam is banned. -edited by admin- "Be careful with what you write on a public forum&quo...

Re: NY Man charged with smuggling birdwings

I will give you an example from my country : - a stupid law has been voted with a ban to collect more than 100 insects per year per person in French Guiana - the French Lepidopterist Association and other important association made some meetings and wrote to FG authorities - this law has been chang...

Oh, yeah. But I was only referring to disinfecting the collections. Just some alternative to paradichlorobenzene.

Re: Preferred Display at Fairs/Expos etc

On another note - how are specimens usually organised? By country or family? Or just a random mix of things? Again, it's hard to say. Both ways have their importance and their supporters! :) Most people probably logically prefer sorting by family. But especially when it comes to sales, sorting by c...

Re: desinfextion

Vabrou, can you please list the specific chemicals used by some museum workers? Paradichlorobenzene is reliable, but it's a carcinogen. That's why it's mostly not used anymore.

Re: Preferred Display at Fairs/Expos etc

An exposed prepared sample is always better. But it depends on the seller's capabilities. Most just don't have the opportunity (space) to have prepared samples of everything. Some only sell packaged material (a disadvantage, but a necessity).

Re: Rubbish "science" is misleading

Very briefly to an interesting discussion. Absolutely essential observations (as I feel it myself). In our small country in the middle of Europe, we also have a "national database" of organisms (mainly plants and animals). There is a problem with the reliability of many data, as they are o...

Re: Idea for rarities collectors??

There may be a problem with legislation in some countries. I think state museums sometimes cannot officially donate material. But as far as I know, there are various grants from which museums pay preparators.

As others have written, Thailand is OK. Also probably still Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia. And most of Africa too (sometimes maybe with bribes) :)

Re: Where can I go?

Don't forget that there is a limit of 1000 insects in French Guiana! This can be caught in about 3 days! It's better with permission. I recommend contacting a local university or museum (in your country) for cooperation and confirmation for a permit to export more insects!

Language. Little stars don't fly for me there buddy. Besides that, the market place is mostly for the EU, everything is out of the USA, I look at specimens there, but I'm not getting a permit for anything, ever. Period. It's not worth it to me. I let other people take those risks and deal with the ...

Luehdorf - as far as moths, can you post a photo of the canvas and lighting you are catching at night? It is also very important to catch in the new moon. But you probably know that. A friend had something similar - maybe even exactly one of the variants on bioform.de. See first photo. I had an ord...

Re: Travel in Saudi Arabia

Yes, of course, catching insects it is a problem in SOME Muslim countries (typically: Egypt, Turkey, Indonesia, in recent years Malaysia). The reason is most often national pride or the opportunity to get some extra money. Certainly not because of nature conservation :) The only Muslim country (as f...

Adam.
Sorry for my english. I meant something like: "they don't care about catching insects" (= they consider it to be a strange pastime at most).
