Re: Consul panariste

This is the best photo I've ever come across of Consul panariste; I've never seen a pinned specimen this brilliant. Perhaps it's because it was photographed in sunlight? - Does not look very convincing to me. The colours look saturated. My two pairs of this species are from Colombia in 1985. Old pi...

Re: Papilio oenomaus female

Not long ago, I acquired a female specimen of Papilio oenomaus, which is found on Timor and its surrounds. Males are rather commonly encountered in the trade, but females appear to be only rarely offered - http://swallowtails.net/P_oenomaus.htm I only have one pair in my collection dating from the ...

Re: Anaea andria

[/quote] The taxonomy of the tribe Anaeini seems to be unsettled, especially for the genus Anaea. By most recent accounts, there are currently only three species classified under the genus Anaea: aidea , andria , and troglodyta . All three of these can be found in the US (with andria having the wide...

Re: Anaea andria

That's a beautiful photo & specimen of A andria. I love these fiery red "true" Anaea. Only have a handful in my collection. Top picture on the left are a pair of A troglodyda portia from Jamaica. On the right two male A aidea from Texas & Mexico. Bottom is the underside of a female...

Re: Agrias butterflies

Does anyone here have the following form of claudina? - I'm not certain of what this form is currently called, but Smart (1984) lists it as claudina Godt. f. sahlkei Hon. (Guy.) . I've been looking for a specimen of this particular form for quite some time, but have never seen one for sale. I have ...

Re: Agrias butterflies

Thank You Olivier. Although Chuck was a lovely guy sometimes his descriptions of forms & species or subspecies were questionable. Good that you cleared that up for me.

Re: Hebomoia / Stichophthalma hybrid

Strange..more Hebomoia than Stichophthalma I think. Possibly artistic license taken with a heavily marked female Hebomoia? Here is a recently set pair of Hebomoia glaucippe formosana with a heavily spotted female as an example. Indeed - I wasn't aware that some female H. glaucippe had hindwing mark...

I met Idea only once in the field (on Biak island, New Guinea). They are very delicate, slow flying beauties. Wonderful to see.
Same here Olivier
The only time I saw Idea in the wild was in Sabah, Borneo in 2008. As you say such graceful butterflies.

Re: Agrias butterflies

My technique for relaxing involves specimens left in papers & placed in a plastic box lined with kitchen paper soaked in boiling water over which is placed a piece of riker. Specimens go on top of this layer of riker to prevent them getting soaking wet. The plastic box then goes into a warm airi...

Re: Agrias butterflies

A drawer in my collection containing some Agrias narcissus I got from a British dealer in the mid 1980s. I was able to get a nice series relatively cheaply compared to prices today. Old photo. Very nice! Did you have any difficulty spreading these? I've heard that Agrias / Prepona can be somewhat p...
