Re: Light collecting

During my field work for beetles, I often set-up a mercury vapor light and a UV light at the same sheet. This established a variety of light spectrum and the MV light seems to pull things in from a greater distance. I will then periodically, say every hour or so, turn off the MV light and leave the ...

Re: What kind of Staphylinidae?

Member of the Aleocharine, which is a very specious group and as a rule one of the toughest to determine to species for the most part . Not much help beyond that. Nice seeing some Coleoptera up!

Re: If you don't go out, you get nothing

Right on Chuck! When someone comments on my sizable Coleoptera collection, I say it's not that I have better luck and find more beetles than anyone else, it's just that I probably work harder than most!

Definitely a carabid beetle. Can't determine from the picture but likely a member of the Harpalini.

Re: Beetle elytra

Most problems can be avoided, and it starts with how the beetle is killed. Specimens placed directly in alcohol will be brittle and often the elytra pop open. No real reason to use anything other than ethyl acetate for killing Coleoptera. The beetles can remain in the killing jar for a reasonable le...

Definitely NOT a tick. May be a true bug nymph or something similar.

Re: Acidity of wood

Major collections all over the world have wood drawers with collections dating back centuries. Bugs from these drawers look as good as the day they were caught in most cases. Light and dermestids are the enemy! lol.

Re: A different way of mounting

For beetles, European workers have "carded" specimens for decades using various recipes of "gum" to glue the beetles to bristle board or card stock. This method never caught on in the US, and has inherent issues with visualizing ventral characters for determination.
