Re: Favorite Classic & Modern Insect Books

Hello 58chevy, The intention, in my list of books that I posted, is to act as a starting point for those interested in getting their own copies. I already spent a lot of time picking out these books (out of several hundred entomology books), carefully giving the individual specifications for each bo...

Favorite Classic & Modern Insect Books

Hello again, On another thread 58Chevy said that "They don't make books like that any more." referring to Berge's 1910 magnum opus. I only partially agree... I did a quick visual inspection of my entomological library & came up with some other books that have really beautiful hand draw...

Re: Beautiful Plates in a 1910 German Book

Hello livingplanet3, The "Golden Guide" series is probably one of the most commonly purchased, in history, in N. Am., by the general populace, for younger children. Literally 100's of these used books are still available (as well as the lastest newer series) on line. I remember back in the...

Re: Beautiful Plates in a 1910 German Book

Hello again Hewi, Fantastic! Many Thanks for the fast response & for taking the time to research my numerous questions. I often find the people's life histories more interesting than the books they authored!...Will do additional research on these two obscure (to me!) characters with the help of ...

Re: More Spring Captures

Very NICE indeed 58chevy!..... We also get the same spp. (rarely the Luna... very localized) up here in NE, SK, Canada on average about 3 months later as well! Still snow on the ground here, but now entering another warm spell so could be an early, drier (perhaps drought) spring/summer. Thanks for p...

Re: Beautiful Plates in a 1910 German Book

Hello Hewi, Thank you very much for showing the two corresponding, 4th edition, 1870 plates, for comparison with those of the 1910, 9th edition. I find both variations absolutely striking (from an artistic POV)... the time, skill, & patience involved in hand coloring those earlier plates was sim...

Beautiful Beetle Book

Hello again, I recently received a very nice book, from Japan, devoted solely to Beetles. The entire text is written in Japanese, but, fortunately, all the scientific names (@ least to Genus...) are included for every pictured beetle. The book is newly published & is available from at least 3 di...

Re: Beautiful Plates in a 1910 German Book

Hello yet again, No problem posting some of those gorgeous plates. IMPO these are some of the most scientifically accurate & beautifully artistic plates ever done... the wonderful arrangement of all the leps, larvae, foodplants, etc., squeezed into each plate, is amazing, as livingplanet3 noted....

Re: Light collecting

Hello Trehopr1, Many Thanks for the generous compliments. When I retired in 2016 these were the kind of traps I always wanted to build & I finally had the time/spare dollars to do so, despite not being a great carpenter or electrician... :D . You should see the huge numbers of Diving beetles (7 ...

Re: Beeflies !

Trehopr1, Congrats on doing such a nice mounting job on what are relatively (at least up here in Sask.!) small insects. I really like the larger ones with the dark mottled patterning on the wings as you have displayed. I would try, only on fresh specimens, (good luck... ) to tease out the lon...

Re: Net bag color?

For many years I used small 12" dia. white or pale yellow nets (from BioQuip) until I went to Costa Rica back many years ago. For that trip I purchased BioQuip's 18" dia. Tropic net with long extensions. I have never looked back at the tiny 12" nets... 18" nets are the way to go ...
