That female looks awesome!!
I only saw males and despite lilacs in full bloom I wasn’t able to spot a female. I’m still missing a female of this species leaving in Canada for over 3 decades. I suppose I did not make enough effort.

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II
So quick review on tigers. Toronto And Mississauga: they are flying here around first two weeks of June, one generation only. They are larger than Canadensis and somehow looks like hybrid between glaucus and canadensis. West of Toronto ( Hamilton, Cambridge and south west of it) I never recall to se...

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II
Paul, both canadensis and glaucus can be found in the GTA region. MST isn’t expected until July, or maybe mid June this year given how warm it has been. Well, it is not as simple as I thought it is too. GTA is rather large and looks like it is boundary zone for Tigers. I don’t have time to post my ...

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II
Today May 24 I’ve seen 3 Papilios here in Toronto area ( north of) and I suspect that they must have been MST as we don’t have here either P.glaucus or canadensis.
I’ve seen about 100 P.canadensis two days ago 150km north of Toronto, they were all fresh and many came to mud puddling (Urine bait).

Re: Questionable Question Marks
We have here on the north side of the Lake Ontario also unusual numbers of V.atalanta. I am not surprised. Clearly they are coming from "south." The question is: why in such numbers? I suspect that warmer weather thru North America this winter cause higher survival rate, also very mild te...

Re: Questionable Question Marks
Last week, before it snowed, there was an unusual number of V. atlanta around. It warmed up a bit three days ago, albeit with rain. Today it's 64F and sunny. There are hundreds of atlanta, everywhere. Most are flying fast, I've only observed one alight. They are absolutely beat. So either there was...

Re: Agrias butterflies
My advice is if you don’t use local organizers like Amazon insects in Peru or Amazon Lodge in French Guiana who will take care of you right at the airport, rent the car at the airport of your destination. You’ll feel comfortable, safe and have shelter just in case you end up having no place to sleep...

I can only agree with John’s posts!

Re: First butterfly of 2024
Today April 10 another warm day and I saw Vanessa atalanta, this species can not overwinter here in south Ontario and it migrates from south usually at the end of spring. I have never seen them here so early, it could be a good year for migrating species as the warmer than normal weather maybe allow...

First butterfly of 2024
Today April 7 I saw first P.rapae here in South/west Toronto. The spring is officially here and it is about two weeks earlier as we had very mild winter this year.

Does anyone know current systematic of this species?
Also if anyone knows good locality to collect it around eastern slope of Rocky Mountains south of Calgary.

I have seen D.plexippus in Costa Rica and Dominican Republic. It does not occur in Thailand or Laos, at least not yet, most of subspecies other than N.American nominate don’t migrate.

Re: Question about pinning spread Lepidoptera
I would also relaxed and spread the specimens. This is the only safe metod. I did it to my entire collection about six years ago changing all black and some old steel pins to proper size stainless steel and included all laser print labels. It took me several months as there was about 1000 specimens ...
