Re: Question about pinning spread Lepidoptera

I would also relaxed and spread the specimens. This is the only safe metod. I did it to my entire collection about six years ago changing all black and some old steel pins to proper size stainless steel and included all laser print labels. It took me several months as there was about 1000 specimens ...

Re: Undet. Day-flying moth (Vietnam)

Very nice species. I have never find it in Northern Thailand which it may not occur there.
I would say it tries to mimic Byasa polyeuctes or dasarada.
Few hundred thousand of years and it will get there.

Re: The Clipper (Parthenos sylvia)

Indeed, it is difficult species to net and most of the time they are in A2 condition so to find nice examples is not an easy task even that the species is quite common in forested areas along the streams.

Re: USA Insect Drawers

What is the main advantage of plastazote, over something such as foamcore? Do pins not leave visible holes in plastazote, if removed? It also grips the pin quite well, despite the fact that the pin is very easy to insert. Just a wonderful material in every way, including appearance - it has no refl...

Re: Net bag color?

I use Japanese green net and paradox khaki net. They are not so visible from far and not asking for trouble by annoying people. I used to use them for many years now and when I try my old white net I couldn’t locate the catch in it. Somehow white colour blind me and can’t really see thru well. Keep ...

It is Calinaga species and if it’s from Vietnam it could be Calinaga buddha. All species of this Genus look similar.

Yes! Indeed, it sounds wonderful as long as we will have enough energy and good health. It could be a great way to finish the journey here.

Re: Research position in Costa Rica!

I saw that announcement too. With this kind of month pay, they should better hire locals... even if the mission itself can be interesting. I don’t think locals can afford to work for $500 per month anymore. Costa Rica is one of the most advanced country in that region and it is also not cheap anymo...

Re: Unknown African Nymphalid i.d.

Thank you VERY much Paul🙏for your prompt reply. My literature on African butterfly fauna is rather limited and their are a lot of butterflies over there ! Sincere thanks. My knowledge of African butterflies lays next to nothing. Seeing similarity with Asian Hypolimnas I just search on google “Hypol...

Re: Trogonoptera brookiana

Adam Is T.brookiana still can be found in some south regions of Peninsular Thailand and if so do you know exact location. No, it has never reliably been found in the far south of Thailand. There are a few specimens with labels stating 'Yala' (the southernmost province) in Europe, according to Haugu...

Re: Trogonoptera brookiana

I was about 15 when my father bought me a framed specimen of T.brookiana back in old days in Poland.
This was the most beautiful butterfly I ever saw.
I still have this specimen after almost 40 years.

RIP Mr.Smith Wow 660 species in small, high altitude country. In the whole Canada we have here just close to 300 species! I just checked again and it’s not that small country, just because it is sandwiched between India and China looks so on the maps. Also includes almost all zones of south slop of ...

In some of my drawers I haven’t change them since I started using these in 2015-16. They are pale yellow but so far no pests, I’m not sure if they still do work or I have no pest in my room.

Re: What do Hesperidologists dream of?

I usually dream of all kind of butterflies and moths but many times huge moths similar to Alcides species but with the wingspan of 40-50cm. And the sad thing is I never have net with me and try to catch them with my hands or hat, the scenery is usually like in “Avatar” movie out of this world or in ...

Re: NY Man charged with smuggling birdwings

I don’t know US but as far as CITES papers the permit is only needed when specimen is crossing a border. One doesn’t need permit at all if specimen is acquired within Canada or I suppose inside other country too. I don’t even have to ask or care if the specimen was legally or illegally imported as I...

No ... but your pool is harmless to them...
I suppose you meant :” Yes…but your pool is harmful to them…” as they will die in it.
