Re: Agrias butterflies

My advice is if you don’t use local organizers like Amazon insects in Peru or Amazon Lodge in French Guiana who will take care of you right at the airport, rent the car at the airport of your destination. You’ll feel comfortable, safe and have shelter just in case you end up having no place to sleep...

I can only agree with John’s posts!
If you don’t go collecting in tropics you don’t live your life.

Re: First butterfly of 2024

Today April 10 another warm day and I saw Vanessa atalanta, this species can not overwinter here in south Ontario and it migrates from south usually at the end of spring. I have never seen them here so early, it could be a good year for migrating species as the warmer than normal weather maybe allow...

First butterfly of 2024

Today April 7 I saw first P.rapae here in South/west Toronto. The spring is officially here and it is about two weeks earlier as we had very mild winter this year.

Anthocharis sara, stella, julia

Does anyone know current systematic of this species?
Also if anyone knows good locality to collect it around eastern slope of Rocky Mountains south of Calgary.
As far as my research there should be A.stella inhabit some areas.

Re: Question about pinning spread Lepidoptera

I would also relaxed and spread the specimens. This is the only safe metod. I did it to my entire collection about six years ago changing all black and some old steel pins to proper size stainless steel and included all laser print labels. It took me several months as there was about 1000 specimens ...

Re: Undet. Day-flying moth (Vietnam)

Very nice species. I have never find it in Northern Thailand which it may not occur there.
I would say it tries to mimic Byasa polyeuctes or dasarada.
Few hundred thousand of years and it will get there.

Re: The Clipper (Parthenos sylvia)

Indeed, it is difficult species to net and most of the time they are in A2 condition so to find nice examples is not an easy task even that the species is quite common in forested areas along the streams.

Re: USA Insect Drawers

What is the main advantage of plastazote, over something such as foamcore? Do pins not leave visible holes in plastazote, if removed? It also grips the pin quite well, despite the fact that the pin is very easy to insert. Just a wonderful material in every way, including appearance - it has no refl...

Re: Net bag color?

I use Japanese green net and paradox khaki net. They are not so visible from far and not asking for trouble by annoying people. I used to use them for many years now and when I try my old white net I couldn’t locate the catch in it. Somehow white colour blind me and can’t really see thru well. Keep ...

Re: Research position in Costa Rica!

I saw that announcement too. With this kind of month pay, they should better hire locals... even if the mission itself can be interesting. I don’t think locals can afford to work for $500 per month anymore. Costa Rica is one of the most advanced country in that region and it is also not cheap anymo...

Re: Trogonoptera brookiana

Adam Is T.brookiana still can be found in some south regions of Peninsular Thailand and if so do you know exact location. No, it has never reliably been found in the far south of Thailand. There are a few specimens with labels stating 'Yala' (the southernmost province) in Europe, according to Haugu...
