About a month ago I had to urgently relocate away from Bunia. I was able to charter a Cessna Caravan out, but it was filled with our team members and other colleagues, so non-essential belongings were left behind. My collection sits there as we wait to see what will happen .
Fortunately(?), when ...

Malaise traps?
I'm curious if anyone here has had experience collecting Leps using malaise traps?
How practical are they? Ease of use? Portability? Do they work without a killing chamber? Would ants be a problem in the tropics?
Article I just read, in which different designs were tested: https://link.springer ...

Re: How Genetic studies reveal new relationships, species
I think that if a subspecies is now recognized as a species, any "forms" that then merit being raised to subspecies level can be done so while adhering to the ICZN code. Depending on how they were described, some of those "forms" can have their status revised (pulled out of synonymy, stat. rev. or ...

Similarly, there are some pretty stunning Lycaenids in this paper (this time from Papua New Guinea).

Riodinidae of West Papua
Today I received a Google Scholar alert linking to this 49 page publication on the Riodinidae of West Papua. Not my geographic area of study, but it is interesting to see plates of species which I've never seen before.

Re: some assembly required
Really informative. I'm still not sure why, but I tend to have this problem with Graphium specimens more so than any others. I've tossed several nice specimens because they've just fallen apart.
It'd be good to know if there's anything specifically special about "insect glue". Hopefully I can drum ...

Trehopr, I was being serious. Post the ventral surfaces and I'll do what I can to ID these.
The 3rd specimen could do with more data than just a date though. Is there something written on the back of that slip of paper?

Exactly. The collection contains a surprising number of undescribed species. Steve's also been actively trying to recruit folks to take interest in describing the things.Chuck wrote: Mon Nov 04, 2024 12:19 am God knows what important future discoveries they'd leave behind.

Re: WSJ Article re African Leps
Steve's research collection is likely the most comprehensive collection of African butterflies in the world. It contains many holotypes and many examples of species only found in his collection and one or two others. His library is also excellent. His (and the collection's) contributions to ...

Now, when do we get an update from you????
I wish I had update worthy things to say! I was in Canada from December through August, so no new adventures in the recent past and I probably won't get a chance to do any real collecting until January next year. I am still working on a paper in which ...

Low heat: This is a form of 100% control and killing of psocids and dermestids in insect storage which I personally developed and successively used for the past 50+ years. YES, it absolutely works. Re: Proper citation for Hewitson's "Illustrations of New Species of Exotic Butterflies"
Thanks Adam. Yeah, I had consulted Funet. I'm wondering how that 1866 date was arrived at. There must be some reasoning why it's that and not some year between 1872 & 1876.
Also wondering if it should be (Hewitson, 1866) or (Hewitson, [1866])?
