Re: Eurytides marcellus
The dark Florida specimens look very similar to E. philolaus, a Mexican species that strays into the Lower Rio Grande Valley of TX.

Strategus mormon
Found this guy last night at a gas station in east TX. It's only the 3rd specimen of this species I've ever collected, and the first male. Horns on S. mormon are minimal in comparison to other Strategus.

Trichiotinus lunulatus
These bugs are out in big numbers right now in E. Texas. Caught at least 30 of them this morning. They are about 10 to 12 mm long and look like miniature metallic green Goliath beetles. All were caught on flowers.

Re: Exactly what is Hyphantria cunea?
Very impressive Hyphantria series. I never would have guessed that there was that much variation. After reading the luna commentary, I checked my lunas and observed exactly what Vernon mentioned regarding variations in successive broods. I also noticed an unusual spring-brood specimen from Florida (...

Check the drawer dates. Maybe you mixed up the chronological order.

Re: Anisota virginiensis
A. virginiensis & D. rubicunda (along with A. stigma) are common in the pineywoods north of Houston. I captured a couple of males sitting on a wall back in March. Yes, the transparent forewings are very cool. I once saw about a dozen of them hovering in place about a foot off the ground. Impress...

Re: Thoughts on NABA?
I personally do not like NABA's anti-collecting stance. They sometimes harass collectors, so I try to avoid NABA people. I keep a copy of P.17 of the Kaufmann Field Guide in my car, which explains that collecting has almost zero effect on butterfly populations and that the "bad guys" are t...

Re: Using absolutes: always, never
The use of absolutes bothers me because there are no absolute certainties in nature, although many things come close. When a meteorologist says that there is a 100% chance of rain, he knows it's never that certain but close enough that his forecast will most likely come true. It would be more accura...
