Re: Cartoon name for new species?

It's about time. Except possibly for Star Trek, The Simpsons is the greatest tv show of all time. There is a Simpsons episode for every facet of modern
life.

Re: Collecting in Vietnam

These topics are always interesting.
So then- the seller{s} currently using eBay and located/shipping
from Vietnam are illegal? Assuming I understand the thread correctly?
Interesting.

Re: Collecting in Vietnam

It may be safe, but it's not legal to send insect material of any sort through the mail without a permit, especially from overseas. That includes sending material to other countries from the USA. I've already had that argument at the post office. I've thought that using the mail would be a good opti...

All great looking moths, and super setting jobs.
I have an eclectic success rate with spreading these smaller leps.

Old books and plates are wonderful to see. Photos aren't everything.
I have some of Haekel's plates as well, amazing artwork in these older books.
Wishing I had more wall space.

Re: Interesting Caterpillar Behaviour

It is interesting, I don't think I've had a larva do that in particular, but they do sometimes go off script. Raise enough and eventually you'll see nearly
everything. Nearly. Yes, only one chance to get pictures usually.

Good luck, sounds interesting. Try hairspray for the wings perhaps. I have made clocks using spiderwebs that I have sprayed with hairspray, there's
more to it than just that, but it may be a substitute for the clear polyurethane.

Re: NY Man charged with smuggling birdwings

This topic has brought a question to my mind. Do people really make a living selling insects? I've tried it years ago, when the internet was young. It seems like a difficult market. Perhaps it's the suppliers, but in any event, how many buyers are out there that continue to purchase material? I find...

Re: NY Man charged with smuggling birdwings

Agreed Chuck, clearly Charles knew what he was doing, continuing to receive material, he was still operating his business up until not long ago.
He was gruffy and perhaps conceited, tempting fate with the feds is not my idea of sound strategy.

Re: NY Man charged with smuggling birdwings

That's unfortunate for Dr. Limmer. I am sorry for him. Yes, he circumvented the rules. Nevertheless, I have sympathy, not everyone will, like I told
my defense attorney one time- "someone's got to do it" . If there is a market, there will be suppliers, I have limmerleps butterflies-

The color change before they burrow in. It happens sometime during the night and they park f a few hours before wandering.
Digging in was a little problematic, they are picky and took some coaxing, but turn into pupa fairly quickly.

Re: Beeflies !

I like the hoverflies and beeflies. Yes, when I was younger, I caught everything. Now, it is different, and I have narrowed the field a bit, but all insects are fair game, especially something new or to cool to pass up. Here we have several species I have noticed of hoverflies and the beeflies. Cock...

Re: Light collecting

You're not alone. Everyone has noticed different behavior at the light, some species tend to land on the fringes of the light footprint, and some never seem to alight before flying off out of sight. I try to not stare at the light in the first place :) It certainly appears that many fly to the light...

About as big as they get.

There is an amazing color change just before they burrow in, I'll get to that later.

I have read that mercury vapor attracts a wider range of insects, as well as some that won't fly to UV. Mercury vapor takes more electricity, so you may need a generator in the field. I haven't seen any posts or read anything about battery operated mercury vapor. Let us know if you find one. I have ...

Interesting. Anyone who has worked or been around building construction has probably noticed water beetles and other aquatics will sometimes land on a plywood roof, and presumably other reflective surfaces.

Re: tiny caterpillars

DSCN2190-1.jpg Nice beetles, I've always wanted to make a display mount with weevils. We might as well have a new caterpillar picture- this one is a freshly molted wallichi larva, the blue color is transitory and only happens after molting. Seems like I always forget something. One interesting thin...

there is the canned air I use for blowing dust around the house, it won't do much good now, but Bioquip sold a cleaning fluid for insects, in particular, beetles, it's components are- ethyl alcohol ,ethyl acetate and Benzene (5.5%). That's exactly how the ingredients are listed on the bottle. It was...

Re: Net bag color?

The net I normally use is green, I never thought of the color being discreet, I read that green is less frightening to the quarry. Maybe, maybe not. Maybe I need more time in the field- In any event. any one else with me that wants a net gets white. Although my folding net is white and I use that a ...

Well, I think all mammals are cute on some level, as far as the rabbits, there aren't enough or any of them to be pests. I have an old photo of a rabbit here at home, but it was at least 10 or more years ago. Right now the starlings are frustrating me, the deer here are virtually tame, and very relu...
