Thanks, Adam. I'll share the photo once I finished mounting the specimens.

Re: Papilio machaon from Sichuan, Identification please.

This is a specimen I just bought from Japanese. I’m wondering whether this is spring form ssp. schantungensis or Papilio verityi. The label is Jizu Shan, Dali, Yunnan, China.

Re: A question for Graphium(Pazala) mullah chungianus

So it appears from that tree that chungianus is a distinct, undescribed species. Though granted, if I understand Adam they only analyzed one specimen.

Thank you Chuck. That's why I brought up this question. Haha..
Considering the extremely limited distribution of the "subspecies" in Taiwan, its ...

Re: A question for Graphium(Pazala) mullah chungianus

Thank you Adam. You truly know the best.

While reading this book, I noticed that morphologically, ssp. kooichi seems to be more similar to Taiwan's ssp. chungianus. This made me curious about the phylogenetic relationship of this species.

A question for Graphium(Pazala) mullah chungianus

According to the Guide to the Butterflies of the Palearctic Region(part 1 second edition, 2024), Graphium mullah is divided into three subspecies: ssp. mullah, ssp. kooichii, and ssp. chungianus. However, based on the phylogenetic tree constructed using mitochondrial genome analysis in the paper ...

Re: New Taiwan machaon paper

Interestingly, based on the COI analysis in the paper, verityi and archias fall within machaon clade rather than being distinct species.

Re: Papilio machaon from Sichuan, Identification please.

Thank you so much.

Is there a clear boundary in the distribution of these two species, or perhaps a transition zone?

By the way, any news about the taxonomic status of the Taiwan Papilio machaon? Some say it holds a rather unique taxonomic status, but it's unclear where exactly it falls within the ...

Re: Papilio machaon from Sichuan, Identification please.

This should be Papilio archias , not P. verityi which has a much larger red anal eye spot, normally without any black edge along the lower margin of the eye spot, and also has even longer tails.

Note that both are separate species from each other and from P. machaon . Also P. verityi does not ...

Papilio machaon from Sichuan, Identification please.

Does anyone know which subspecies this is? The location is Mt. Gonggashan in the Ganzi area of Sichuan, at an elevation of 3000m. My guess is that it could either be Papilio machaon verityi or Papilio machaon archias.

Re: Papilio paris

Hello Adam,

Has P. paris tamilana been sampled in recent studies? I am curious if it has also been determined to be a separate species through mitochondrial chromosome analysis.
