Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II

I noticed for all "P canadensis" for this year in NY on iNaturalist, the observations east of Interstate 81 are wrong- they are all Spring Form. Also noticed most are on the ground. So I headed a bit south where there are two ponds with shores, and watercourses, etc. Saw two. Drove 20 minu...

Re: Limenitis chrysalides (continuation)

Surely, somebody must have studies and published on this hump. Right? It is rather obvious. I mean, we have people publishing on Tortricidae, and this is far more interesting.

Re: Limenitis chrysalides (continuation)

I checked my wild-caught arthemis, astyanax, and archippus. The abdomen is humped there, though few have much in the way of a tuft of hair. I wonder if it's a wear item that gets lost with age/ use. But the astyanax and arthemis, at least, have a consistent hump, which I'd have just written off as t...

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II

23 May 2024: four observed, one captured To think- last year I had 40 days in the field before a single Tiger capture. This year, two in two days. And the first female Spring Form! Nectaring on Hesparis matronalis (dame's rocket). https://a.l3n.co/i/lN2GQc.md.jpeg Look at that sold yellow submargina...

Re: Where to buy: Bioquip folding net "National Park Special"

COMPARISON: BQNPS and Stout/Raising Butterflies collapsible nets SHORT VERSION: 1. The connecting handle sections are shorter on the Stout net (good) 2. The BQNPS net connection will fit the Stout handle sections, but not vice versa 3. Net bags are the same dimensions, but new nets are stiff! LONG V...

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II

The first Tiger spotted in the Finger Lakes region of NY was 18 may 2024. Weather was 22C and sunny. The previous two weeks had been cool, rainy, and garbage. Actually, the previous seven months had been garbage. A lucky catch this morning- in the back yard-of "Spring Form". Clearly not ca...

Re: Agrias butterflies

I understand this but one would have to admit that a lot of dealers do stretch things in asking price to point of absurdity There is of course the point of asking as much as possible to maximize profit. There's a good chance somebody will come along and pay it. Remember, there are those for whom pa...

Re: Agrias butterflies

Agrias are involved in very complex mimicry rings triggering different forms in each zone of Amazonia. Studying the distribution of each forms is very interesting. Each Rio of Amazonia seems to trigger different forms, these are the local forms. Then you have some individual forms (various forms in...

Re: Vanessa atalanta migration 2024

Maybe they mated, laid eggs and now there are larvae 'everywhere'? It will be interesting to see what happens later in the year. Adam. A reasonable hypothesis, which had not occurred to me. If this is the case, the young Urtica foodplants would be stripped to nothing; though, they readily regrow. Y...

Now that I think of it, I've not seen any in a while. Watch, I'll spot one later today. But, clearly they are not blasting around by the hundreds anymore.

Re: Bug Fair May 18 and 19 Los Angeles Natural History Museum

We've discussed this here in the past, same story. LA is a great show, specimens you won't find commercially (some people don't feel like shipping), plus you get to meet some great collectors. I tried on the east coast, there's little interest and costs are high (particularly insurance). The only wa...

That is a spectacular specimen, well demonstrating the potential size and morphology of the female. A tiny blemish does nothing to diminish it in any way.

07 May 2024: back at it, albeit in KY. More than a dozen Tigers spotted, couldn't net a single one- all flying somewhere fast and erratic. I couldn't get to a couple of my favored sites because of flooding.

Re: Eurytides marcellus

I saw Papilio troilus, and undetermined thing like P tharos, and blues puddling, but in KY last week no marcellus puddling. In fact, I've never seen marcellus puddle. Interesting. I only brought two specimens back, I believe a pair, and the difference is interesting, one that is definitely female is...
