Re: Where to buy: Bioquip folding net "National Park Special"
Make sure you get the looser weave bag. The tighter weave is too hard to see through and slows the net. You may have to ask for this via messaging or email.

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II
I must say Chuck is doing a great job trying to unravel what seems to be a very complex situation. Adam. I should note that though these are my field notes, I am not working alone, and am indebted to others. Eurytides, who got me started on this darned project to begin with, continues his research ...

OK, this is rediculous. I've started building my decoy, which I had 9 months to make, but didn't.

Re: Buying specimens in bulk for an entomology workshop
I can send you a box of specimens at no charge.
I do need a shipping address. I'm not sure why you can't PM, perhaps one needs a certain number of posts first?

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II
Thanks for the kind words Adam, I think you're the only one who might read this. For my life, I've been a lumper, not a splitter. As you very well know from your own work & collaboration, we now know that some splitting is very appropriate. In the case of the eastern Tiger Swallowtails, I can't ...

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II
29may24 64F/ 18C 50% cloud After four days of heavy rain and storms I was surprised to see any Tigers. I almost caught a female who wouldn't leave a box elder tree, basking in the sun. After she left another arrived, looking for a place in the sun, when a third tiger arrived and off they went. Later...

SPRING FORM in FINGER LAKES, NY That there exists a Spring Form of " Papilio glaucu s" (in quotes because that is undetermined) has long been recognized. According to Scriber, 1990 "Interaction of Introgressionfrom Papilio Glaucus Canadensis and Diapause in Producing "Spring Form...

Re: Unique papilio polyxenes
This "orange form" does pop up now and then. I'm guessing maybe 1 in 1000? I don't know what causes it, but they fly with normal polyxenes, so I'm guessing it's not environmental.

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II
Paul & Mothman55- your personal observations are invaluable, keep posting! In "Butterflies of Viginia" 1953(?) Clark & Clark went off-topic and delved into many pages on forms and ranges and flight periods found throughout eastern North America. For the most part, there has been no...

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II
I noticed for all "P canadensis" for this year in NY on iNaturalist, the observations east of Interstate 81 are wrong- they are all Spring Form. Also noticed most are on the ground. So I headed a bit south where there are two ponds with shores, and watercourses, etc. Saw two. Drove 20 minu...

Re: Limenitis chrysalides (continuation)
Surely, somebody must have studies and published on this hump. Right? It is rather obvious. I mean, we have people publishing on Tortricidae, and this is far more interesting.

Re: Limenitis chrysalides (continuation)
I checked my wild-caught arthemis, astyanax, and archippus. The abdomen is humped there, though few have much in the way of a tuft of hair. I wonder if it's a wear item that gets lost with age/ use. But the astyanax and arthemis, at least, have a consistent hump, which I'd have just written off as t...

23 May 2024: four observed, one captured To think- last year I had 40 days in the field before a single Tiger capture. This year, two in two days. And the first female Spring Form! Nectaring on Hesparis matronalis (dame's rocket). https://a.l3n.co/i/lN2GQc.md.jpeg Look at that sold yellow submargina...

Re: Where to buy: Bioquip folding net "National Park Special"
COMPARISON: BQNPS and Stout/Raising Butterflies collapsible nets SHORT VERSION: 1. The connecting handle sections are shorter on the Stout net (good) 2. The BQNPS net connection will fit the Stout handle sections, but not vice versa 3. Net bags are the same dimensions, but new nets are stiff! LONG V...

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II
The first Tiger spotted in the Finger Lakes region of NY was 18 may 2024. Weather was 22C and sunny. The previous two weeks had been cool, rainy, and garbage. Actually, the previous seven months had been garbage. A lucky catch this morning- in the back yard-of "Spring Form". Clearly not ca...
