That's why the species can often only be distinguished by genitalia preparation.

Mullein moth(Cucullia verbasci)

by daveuk » Sat May 27, 2023 10:59 pm

For a few years now the brightly coloured caterpillars of this species have attacked the Buddleia davidii shrubs in my garden. They are easily seen during the daytime as they feed & bask on the leaves protected no doubt by their warning colouration. I collected some last year, fed them on Buddleia leaves. They pupate underground so I just placed the leaves onto a pot containing compost. They eventually buried themselves & pupated.
A few weeks ago I dug out the pupae, brought them inside, put them in an emerging cage & got the two adults pictured here as a result. Also a photo of a fully grown caterpillar from last year

We have 2 species of this genus in Thailand. Cerny & Pinratana, 2009 (Moths of Thailand vol. six Arctiidae) state that examination of genitalia is often necessary to distinguish the species.

I'm sure that many of us knew Alexander well. Let's hope he is safe.

I have a genuine British specimen of this caught by a famous collector around 1903, one of the very few in existence.

My Chrome browser gives me the option to translate the page, and there are no names or data, except
Specimen name Insects of male and female type (ginan morph)

According to his relatives, he wanted to explore the islands of the estuary in order to find rare insects.
The dangers of insect collecting do not only apply to tropical jungles.

Hopefully he is safely stuck on one of those islands, after his kayak floated away, and will be found soon.

My Japanese is a bit rusty. The specimens are fantastic, I like the following best
http://db.museum.kyushu-u.ac.jp/entomol ... l=9&it=394
But Adam is right, without names it's not good for identification. Since my Japanese is so bad, I can't see if there's a listing of the names anywhere on the page, or at least a listing.
But a great picture book it certainly is.

Hi Bart and collectors!

Thank you for correcting me! After looking into it, I am in agreeance with you and have updated my listing as well!

I’m new to the entomology world and am teaching myself the best I can, so I always appreciate any outside help I can get! 😊

I hope you have a fantastic day!

Hey Crazypapilio,
Yes, I thought so...I will message that dealer on Etsy that he is selling it for 'chikae'.
Thanks! Have a nice weekend!

I still need to get out with my uv light. Has anyone else noticed the amount of livestock posts? I think perhaps this season I've seen more
posts than usual. Do we have more members or is it something else?
I normally get out right after Memorial day, besides the people, our weather seems to start cooperating.

As I was searching the internet now, I found an Art dealer in USA who is selling this "papilio chikae".
Looks bit different then the one I obtained here on the market. If it is really also Chikae (or hermeli?)
It looks like a female specimen. Am I correct?

The female Saturniid pictured is a member of the Saturniid genus Leucanella.

Your two, somewhat worn, Saturniid specimens from Peru are not an Automeris species. They are in the Saturniid genus Leucanella. They are likely Leucanella contempta contempta.
