Cryptography

by lamprima2 » Fri Jan 31, 2025 5:10 am

Hi all,
Here is a scan of a label from an old Caligo specimen, supposedly C. eurylochus. I tried to process it in Photoshop to make it readable, but I had no success. I can only read "Apr 2009, C..... N. Peru." Can anyone guess what the label said?

Thank you. I did find that Air France flew from Miami to Martinique, then to Pointe à Pitre, then finally to Cayenne. Originally all I could find was flying to Paris, then to Cayenne!

There are some flights between Miami and French Guadeloupe (Pointe à Pitre). Then Pointe à Pitre - Cayenne.

Maybe some other roads, try some air flight websites like edreams.

Did anyone fly to French Guiana from the US? If so, what airline and what was the route? Did you need to use a travel agent?

Good to see that the matter has been sorted for you Laurie
I too have a long term relationship with Mari Felipe, her husband Nel Layron and their business Bluemetallic88 on Ebay.
I posted a warning back in March 2023 about my dealings with them and I still stand over this as I have never gotten a refund despite numerous emails which eventually went ignored.
I think Mari will have to work a lot harder to preserve her "honesty and reputation"
She can start by refunding my money and maybe then I may admire and respect that.

You'd never know the topside was so much different. I don't see any differences in the ventral side.
Capturing a wild abberation is an exciting thing and something to be proud of.
Often it isn't until we go back through our finds that we find such cool things, only after tumbling my agates did I find
what is called an "enhydro" where a water bubble is trapped inside. Almost impossible to photograph, I've already tried.

Chuck and wollastoni,
Thank you both. I need a black background in one drawer only.
It looks like the plastazote is glued to the bottom of the drawer
and can not be removed easily. I will try covering the drawer's
bottom with black paper instead of changing the plastastazote layer.

You know, it's also interesting that in one point of view, my comment about using the proper name could be considered a little whiny.
Allow me to elaborate- First, let's decide I am not familiar with the species or genus. I'm probably still going to have to look up the name, whatever
it's being called.
But the complaint stands! Use the agreed on Latin, which changes often enough. I just found out that Calosaturnia is the new name for the
formerly Saturnia mendicino, and I'll assume the other Pacific coast "Saturnias".

I hate when peolple doesn´t use the latin names when they write about Lepidoptera for example and now I think that is because they don´t have learnt the latin names cause they think it´s harder.

I just had to look up a "common" name

And here I thought I was all alone in suffering such ignorance. It’s like dealing with the bird watching butterfly types- “which checkerspot is that?” Beats me, I only know the Latin name.

I guess you are using the "Live insect" category. A lot of moth breeders are not entomologists/collectors and mainly use common names only. I agree with you latin names are more useful (especially for us foreigners...).

An algorithm plugged on IA could easily automatically add the latin names but it would take time to develop it. I will think about it.

I decided to change the subject from 'nomenclature and Latin' to 'Common names in Classifieds' in order to point out the issue, which I totally agree with Kevin on.

Common names in Classifieds

by kevinkk » Sat Jan 25, 2025 12:55 am

Am I just in need of something else to think about or is anyone else disappointed in the use of non-Latin names being used in the classified ads.
I just had to look up a "common" name. I don't like it.
I suppose there's no way for an algorithm to prevent this. People- look, it's not what we do, it's a bad look for you as a seller, that's about all I have,
and I look forward to never seeing a non-Latin name used to describe a species which I am certain has a Latin name, and has that name for a reason.
I am wasting my time aren't I? More people should read the Forum.

That stuff is pretty tough, I don't think you'd get a pin in, certainly not easily.
